"I am so happy that my A/C is fixed! Corey from Elliot's Air Conditioning, came out and serviced my compressor and A/C unit, unclogged what was stopped up, added freon and cleaned the compressor. Corey was very informative, told me what he doing and what needed to be done with my unit. The job was done right, good price and excellent customer service. I will use Elliot's A/C again. Thank you."

"The service technician was able to evaluate my problem and get my AC running again. He also gave me a very honest evaluation of what I may need to do in the future. I liked the fact that I didn't feel like he was just going to try and sell me an entire new AC system."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

To keep a window air conditioner in good working order, you should clean the filter regularly, inspect the seals, and store the unit properly during the off-season.

In some cases, yes, portable air conditioners are worth buying. They’re a relatively affordable option for cooling small spaces. (On average, they cost between $100 and $500 per unit.) Plus, they’re easy to set up, and you can move them around to cool various parts of your home as needed. However, they aren’t the most efficient AC option, and they tend to be noisy.

For the most part, you should leave your AC fan in “auto” mode so that it only runs during a heating or cooling cycle. Keeping it in this position uses less energy, which equals lower utility bills. However, there are some situations where it’s better to leave your AC fan on, including if you have allergies or there are lots of people in your home.

Setting your AC unit to 78 degrees can, indeed, help you save energy. In fact, according to experts, every degree you turn the unit up could save you between 1% and 3% on your energy bills. That said, turning your unit off entirely while you’re out might actually be less efficient than keeping it on at a higher temperature. Why? The unit will need to work extra hard to cool the house back off again after all those hot hours.

AC evaporator coils should be cleaned at least once per year to keep your unit in good condition. For optimal performance, consider cleaning them twice a year—once before and once after the main cooling season. More frequent cleanings may be necessary for older systems, units with performance issues, or those in climates with high levels of humidity, dust, and dirt.
