"I'm very glad I found this company! I bought a new home in Wimberley in October 2020 that had a large (about 1/2 acre) lot. The builder had leveled the front yard and done some very basic landscaping in the front, but the backyard was uneven, strewn with large rocks, and consumed by weeds. It was difficult to even walk back there. In order to fully enjoy this large open space, it would need a lot of work. It was a big project, but HCLI put in a new concrete walkway from the front to the back of the house, leveled out the rest of the rocky terrain, built a concrete pad for an outdoor kitchen and constructed a very attractive cedar structure to cover it, built a large wooden deck around our pool, and planted some privacy trees. It turned out great! We now have a very attractive and functional backyard that we can enjoy for years to come. Blake McLean and Chris Lawson were very competent and honest, and the pricing was very fair. Their employees are all competent, hard-working, polite, and produce excellent work. If you need anything done to your property and the harsh terrain of the Hill Country, contact this company. They are really, really good!"

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

Since you’ll likely be digging a trench to install your yard drainage system, this is a good time to complete other tasks that involve digging up your yard, including: Sprinkler system installation Lawn reseeding Regrading your yard Redesigning your landscaping If your drain is under a walkway or driveway, your contractor must also remove those materials. This is a great time to consider upgrading your hardscaping features, especially if they’re nearing the end of their life span.

The best soil to put around a house foundation is fill dirt, which is soil that’s specifically designed for covering large areas and filling in holes. Don’t waste money regrading around your foundation with expensive topsoil. Use topsoil only for the last layer of soil, about 5 to 10 inches, so that when you do your foundation planting, your grass and plants will have the nutrients they need to grow.

Although it’s not required to lay anything under mulch, it can help to put landscape fabric or plastic weed barrier down and lay mulch on top. The barrier helps keep weeds from growing up through your mulch. It also helps keep rodents and insects from burrowing into the ground underneath.

Keeping your gravel driveway beautiful—or any gravel structure for that matter—does call for regular maintenance. You may occasionally need to add more gravel to low areas if you notice any pooling after rainfall. Gravel might also become excessively dusty over time. You can compact it with a mechanical compactor, which you can rent for around $80 to $85 per day.

To minimize maintenance requirements for your gravel, it’s important to ensure your land is properly graded before installing the gravel. It’s also helpful to lay landscaping fabric beforehand to keep it in place.

Yes, you need to use landscape fabric under your rubber mulch. Rubber mulch doesn’t decompose, so putting landscape fabric down can work as a barrier between your mulch and soil, preventing your mulch from mixing with your soil and leaching chemicals like aluminum, cadmium, and copper into it. Also, since weeds can occasionally get through rubber mulch, using landscape fabric as a second form of protection can increase its effectiveness.
