A prefab, or prefabricated garage, requires far less construction work than one with a foundation and frame, but it’s not nearly as desirable and may not be a worthwhile option. Most cabinetry made for a garage will have special coatings and finishes built to withstand extreme heat and cold, moisture, pest damage, rusting, and dry rot. However, many homeowners have put their old kitchen cabinets in the garage, added a couple of fresh coats of paint, and use them for a while without too much wear and tear.

If you enjoy tinkering with cars, woodworking, or exercising in your garage, then a garage heater may be worth it to you. If your garage is used mainly for storage, you may opt to skip installing a garage heater. If you live somewhere with favorable weather year-round, you can probably go without one as well. But for most homeowners, a garage heater is a good investment and makes the garage a more comfortable place to spend time.

A garage ceiling needs a vapor barrier if it’s a heated garage or if you’re installing insulation in the ceiling. Without a vapor barrier, you risk moisture issues and mold growth. If you have an unheated garage and don’t plan on installing insulation that could get wet and harbor mold, the ceiling doesn't need a vapor barrier.

While you can technically use WD-40 to lube a garage door, it is not the best option since the oil it leaves behind can attract dirt. Instead, go to the hardware store and locate a lithium- or silicone- based garage grease. You can also search for garage door lubricant online; just make sure you get one that is made with lithium or silicone.
