"I was out of town so the work was scoped and performed with authorization over the phone. The original request was to replace the faucet with a new one I purchased from Home Depot. When the plumbers arrived, they quoted $550 to install the new faucet set. This was way too high so I asked if they could simply replace the Moen cartridge and ensure no leaks. They said yes and would call me back with details. They called back and said it would be $226 to replace the cartridge. I knew the part was $22 from Home Depot so I asked why it would be so high. They began listing charges such as "service call fee (their shop is only 4 miles away)", "labor" "water shutoff fee" and "parts". I have never heard of a plumber charging "water shutoff" fee. I mean they are plumbers, that is what they do. That is like a truck driver charging a "steering fee". As I was out of town and we needed the shower operational, I authorized the repairs. I do not think that a repair should be nine-times the cost of the part. I do not believe I will be using Heaton again.

"Not good at all. Mr. Herd had to call the manufacturer and order the part. This was on Friday morning, and they said they would Fedx it out the same day, and I should receive it the next day. Well, it's Monday, and it has not arrived. I don't understand how a brand new hot water heater can go out in 3 years, and I've owned houses where the hot water heater last 15 to 17 years before they were replaced. This one I already have trouble with after only 3 years. It's a Rheem. Not a good product at all."

"We have used MET Plumbing three times over the last several years to do work at my mother’s house in Houston, and each time they have done an excellent job.  They replaced an in-attic water heater, and repaired a leaking upstairs shower pan. This last time we had to have a broken cast-iron sewer line replaced.  The house is 50 years old and the main sewer line under the slab had rusted through and had collapsed.

Repair of a broken sewer line under a slab foundation is a major job.  Byron Avelar was the lead plumber and he was excellent.  We thought we just had a stopped up toilet, but Byron showed me with his video endoscope (snake camera) where the problem was located.  I had visions of jackhammers in the house, but Byron explained that they would tunnel under the slab to make the repairs.  It was quite amazing to see the process.  They had to tunnel 25 feet to reach the problem area.  It was a very expensive repair, but Bryon made my mother and myself very comfortable.  Since the process would take several days, I could not be there the entire time since I don’t live in Houston.  Bryon sent me before and after pictures of the repair work and kept me in the loop for each step of the process.  He also reassured my mother.  She thought Bryon was wonderful.

I highly recommend MET Plumbing.  Whether it is just a water heater or a major repair, they really do excellent work.

"No issues on the install.  Trey and his helper arrived on time (they called about 15 minutes before they arrived).  They got down to work right away.  One toilet was removed with no issue but the other took a bit more work.  Trey was concerned the flange may be broken.  Eventually Trey was able to get the toilet removed and it turned out the fasteners were spinning in place (flange was not broken).  It only took a short time to see that Trey really did have a lot of experience as a plumber despite being a young man.  Overall, it went really well. They also cleaned up really well before they left and hauled the older toilets away.
Afterwards, I asked Trey to take a look at our water heater, dishwasher and kitchen sink as we hope to replace these in the near future.  I then called Lee (Owner) and he was able to add a bit more information for me to review.

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

No, you’ll need to drain the tank before changing a water heater element, as the water heater element sticks through the side of the tank and uses a gasket to prevent water from pouring out. However, you don’t always need to drain it completely. If you’re only replacing the upper heating element, you can drain the tank until the water line is below the element. If you’re replacing the lower element, you’ll need to drain the whole thing.

There are many issues that can cause cold showers, but the most likely is a problem with your water heater, especially if other fixtures also don’t get hot water. If it’s just your shower not getting hot water, you likely have a broken or damaged shower cartridge. You can replace this yourself or hire a plumber to do the work for you if you’re not comfortable working with plumbing.

We recommend you turn off the unit, the power, and the water supply as soon as you notice a leak. Your water heater tank should have a dedicated shut-off valve located on the cold inlet pipes. If the valve is broken or inoperable, use the shut-off valve to your home's main water supply to stop the flow to the entire house.

Avoid touching valves or pipes directly without confirming if they are hot. Wear gloves and other safety gear to keep from coming into contact with hot levers or components when turning off your leaking water heater.

When the water expands in a hot water heater, it puts pressure on your hot water pipes and can cause leaks or a rupture in the hot water tank under certain conditions. Pipes or water heaters may split due to the pressure where there is a backflow preventer that prevents the hot water heater from diffusing pressure by releasing water back to the public water line.

In these scenarios, a hot water heater expansion tank provides a place for the hot water heater to relieve pressure and prevent bursts and leaks.

A single shower consumes an average of over 17 gallons, while brushing your teeth with the water running uses up to four unnecessary gallons. Watering the lawn spreads hundreds of gallons of water across the yard each time. Limiting water usage in these areas can significantly cut down your water bill.
