He recommended I talk to a salesperson who ultimately recommended replacing my entire HVAC system at a cost of more than $6500. Fortunately I got a second opinion. That service person recommended recharging the system with coolant and included a die to expose the leaking. Total cost of that second service call was around $400. Now it's August and my (too old) system is functioning perfectly. No leak has been exposed by the dye and I've stayed comfortable all summer long. I would recommend caution when dealing with this company. And a second opinion.
This would be in addition to the information I've already entered. I found it interesting that Mid State responded by saying that I was more interested in replacing my entire system and that the service person had offered to recharge my system. I had expressed an interest in replacing my system only after being given me a laundry list of things that were wrong or about to go wrong while recommending repeatedly that my system was about to fail. He did, in fact offer to recharge the refrigerant but quoted a price in excess of $400 as he was walking out the door. I kept the invoice and I would respectfully disagree with Mid State's response not to mention their assessment of my system.
I would like to emphasize that my system is still cooling my home efficiently and there is still no evidence of the "leak" indicated by the Mid State service person. I would also like to mention that my energy bill has remained at or around the $100 per month mark. Since my home is around 1200 square feet I am inclined to be happy with cost of operation.
I will update this as it becomes necessary.
Here it is November and I can honestly say that my HVAC system has performed flawlessly all season long. Still no evidence of a leak.
It's now May 30th, 2014 and my heating preformed flawlessly all winter long and now that its getting warmer the AC is also working just as it's supposed to. Once again I would like to emphasize that all I had initially requested was a routine inspection and what I got (after disclosing that I had recently had lung surgery) was a laundry list of all manner of ills my system was suffering from. I still have the original invoice written up by the Mid State service person. I also had a neighbor visiting with me at the time the service persons inspection took place. I is discouraging to have had dealings with a company whose only interest in me seem to be selling me an hvac system I didn't necessarily need or afford. The 'so called' leak has yet to materialize. I wouldn't have a problem with being told that my system needed some maintenance but to hear this young man tell it my system was about to fail at any minute. I don't appreciate the implication that I didn't understand what was going on. Neither do I appreciate the use of scare tactics to frighten someone with disabilities into making an expensive purchase they can't afford. I don't doubt these folks have an established customer base that, according to other reviews, is quite happy with their performance. The facts in my situation don't seem to support that and I would never recommend anyone use this business.
Finally the remark this person who responded to my review made alluding to me needing someone else to make this kind of decision for me ("We probably should have tried to set up our meeting times with him when the relative who advises him could be there.") was clearly condescending and meant to be insulting as I am perfectly competent to manage all my own affairs and it really comes across as a particularly cheap shot from mid state. I have a right as a customer to expect to be treated with honorably and with dignity. That certainly didn't happen here. The only failure to communicate was on their part.
Once again I will happily make the copy of the service invoice written by their personnel available to anyone who would like to see it. The unit was 20 years old and needed to be replaced. I called Upton after finding them on Angie's list and they came out and inspected the unit and verified that it needed to be replaced. They had a new unit delivered and installed in less than a week in the middle of a summer heat wave. A week later the wire to the thermostat on another unit got cut and after I repaired the visible damage the compressor was still not kicking on. I called Upton again and they were out the next day and found the wires bare inside the unit. They cleaned and repaired the unit and were very fair with their pricing. I will continue to use Upton electrical for my heat and air and electrical issues. Marcus and Troy, the people that did the job were punctual with stated arrival time, cleaned up worksite and removed all rubbish, very conscientious with customer service and communication.Sadly that can't be said for management and foreman, they finished up the tub but didn't have the curved curtain rod. the handheld shower as was to be provided per contract. They also sent 16" wide insulation instead of 20". Because of the extreme heat they left mid Friday afternoon, which I concurred, and were coming back Sat am to finish--they were on time and ran out of material with 3' of ceiling not finished! They called foreman who was going to pickup additional material but would take 2 1/2 to 3 hrs to get here--I told them to go home and finish it later. Quality of workmanship was slightly less than I expected based on sales representation, but I'm learning new construction is easier than remodeling. Although it took three trips to complete the replacement process, we were only charged for a single trip and during the entire process we had heat available. Outstanding service.

FAQs for heating oil service projects in White Pine, TN
To buy heating oil for your house, contact local heating oil companies to compare prices and place an order once you decide on a supplier. The company will have to deliver your heating oil in a truck designed to carry and dispense heating oil safely. Call and order your heating oil early enough to have your oil delivered before you need to start using it for home heating.
On average, you’ll need about two gallons of oil per day to heat your house when it’s 50 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Most oil tank capacity is about 275 gallons, and heating your house with two gallons of oil per day will last about four and a half months. This consumption will vary depending on the climate and average temperature in your location. For example, if the winters are longer and colder where you live, you’ll probably need to refill your oil tank at least once to get through the winter.
You save money on heating oil in a few ways:
Make sure your home is well insulated and sealed against drafts and heat leakage.
Use a thermostat that’s working properly and calibrated accurately.
Program your thermostat to lower the heat when you’re not home.
Order heating oil during the off-season when prices are likely to be lower.
Summer months tend to be when heating oil prices are lowest because of decreased demand. Buying heating oil during the off-season also prepares you for when the weather gets cold, and you need to start using the oil to heat your home. Although heating oil prices will fluctuate, it’s best to avoid purchasing between September and April, as that's the peak season for heating oil demand.
Overall, heating your home with an oil furnace tends to be less expensive than heating your home with an electric heating system. Oil heating systems stay warm for longer periods of time without drawing a constant electrical current to maintain a temperature. Plus, heating oil systems typically have a longer lifespan and lower price tag than their electrical counterparts, resulting in short- and long-term savings.
