Wood windows are often worth the cost because they add more to curb appeal and your home value than more affordable options like vinyl and aluminum. Wood windows also offer better insulation than vinyl and aluminum windows, and they can last about twice as long. As such, they’re more expensive up front but offer greater value and a higher ROI.

Most modern egress windows installed in basements open outward into a window well, although some older homes have in-swing windows. Egress windows, like casement windows used in other parts of the home, such as bedrooms and bathrooms, may open inward, and these windows are often larger than outward-opening windows.

In short, it depends. After 20 years, the glass in your windows is less energy efficient, which can cause increased electricity bills. You might also see signs of water damage or natural wear and tear over the years. However, with proper maintenance, some window frames can last up to 50 years, so you may only need to replace the glass to save on energy. 

At the same time, window replacement is a major investment, so replacing the glass in rooms most impacted by outdoor temperatures is one way to avoid going all-in to replace your windows.

Most manufacturers have their name imprinted somewhere on the window, such as the spacer bar, hardware, or frame. Other manufacturers will include an identification number printed on the glass itself. If you’re unable to find either of these, then your window was manufactured locally (oftentimes called a “shop window”). 

With a manufacturer name (or even better, the identification number) you can attempt to research the information to find out when the product was made. Keep in mind this won’t tell you when the window was installed on your home, but can get you close.

Arched windows are slightly more expensive than standard rectangular ones, but they only cost $50 to $100 more per window. However, adapting a rectangular wall opening to accept an arched window can add $200 to $400 to your total, making them a more expensive option over sticking with a standard window replacement.
