"Magdiel was very helpful. He has done the detailed inspection, issued a very good report with the recommendation. In the way that it can be done without changes in the existing structure, just by adding reinforcement in design, which requires minimal cost for material and work hours. Thank you, and we would be glad to hire him for the next projects."

"I am having a full master bath and kitchen remodel done with new layouts in both rooms and knocking out a wall. Evolution worked with me to quickly get a drawing done of the new layouts so that the contractor could get started on the project. They made sure to include me in the process so that the design would be done exactly as my wife and I envisioned. They communicated effectively throughout the process and were always courteous and professional. I recommend them to anyone with drafting needs."

"During his initial visit on April 24th he was nice, professional, and did his initial walk through of the house. He listened to what we had to say, took our list of wants and suggested detailed inspection. He returned on the 5th did an inspection of the foundation and  structural integrity of our house . He is now putting together his recommendations for initial repairs, and to schedule a meeting to go over our desires and put together floor plan and complete estimate. He could have told us we need to just build a new home which would have meant more money for him, but he didn't he was informative and honest - leaving us with a very confident feeling. Looking forward to working with him in the future.

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Many horizontal cracks in home foundations result from water and soil pressure from outside of the building or from a footing that is shifting. Under those circumstances, horizontal cracks are a structural problem that requires repair before they become worse and more difficult to fix. However, in very specific cases, thin horizontal cracks may simply be a cosmetic blemish due to concrete shrinkage.

Indications include cracks in walls, uneven floors, and sticking doors or windows that suggest foundation movements.

Costs depend on material choices, labor, and the extent of structural modifications.

Structural engineers typically conduct inspections during a home sale or renovation, looking for signs of structural damage in various structures throughout the building, such as load-bearing walls, joists, beams, roofing trusses, foundations, and chimneys. Some of the warning signs that structural engineers check for include:

  • Dry rot

  • Infestation

  • Shifting or cracking foundations

  • Erosion

  • Water damage

  • Sagging, shifting, or damaged walls, ceilings, or roofing support

On average, 6 inches of concrete can hold around 150 pounds per square foot, but the exact weight that 6 inches of concrete can hold depends on factors such as the type of concrete, the reinforcement method, soil conditions below, and structural design. If you’re concerned about the longevity of your concrete patio, walkway, or driveway, hire a professional to help you choose an appropriate concrete thickness and reinforcement method for your needs.
