"Responded immediately to my request. Professional. On time. Thorough. Explained the work he would do, gave reasonable, fair estimate and completed the work on time. Excellent work: power washed drive, house and refreshed and painted the deck. Completely satisfied with the work and cost. I can highly recommend this contractor and will definitely use this contractor again."

Small jobs welcome

"Our project began with looking for a business to stain our backyard deck addition we had built last year, along with restaining and repairing our original deck. We also wanted to add shade to our deck. We had several companies come to understand our needs and give us quotes. Tyler from Houston Haus had very good ideas and offered a fair quote for our project. Tyler's combination of an engineering mindset and creative ideas persuaded us to hire Houston Haus. Tyler laid out the plans for the project from start to finish. He communicated when he was going to work and always kept us up to date on the progress of the project. Tyler always brought forward ideas on the esthetics of the deck and pergola to our attention. The end result was a very beautiful pergola and a total refurbish of the existing deck. We look forward to using Houston Haus for further projects."

"Rob was very helpful in helping with picking out paint colors, and, letting me know how dark, or, bright they would look with the natural light on the room. He used some unused paint that he had on hand to prime coat some of the rooms, thus saving me money. They repainted when I chose a color that I later didn't like, with a minimum of eye rolling. Lol The workers cleaned up after themselves everyday. They did excellent Sheetrock repair, and, Rob is an excellent detail painter -- no taping needed!

"My husband is being relocated and we needed to hire a professional to help with various repairs and maintenance jobs to get our house ready to put on the market. I did not know who to call. I searched Home Advisor. About 10 minutes after I submitted a request for a handy man Greg called me. It was on a weekend. Greg made an appointment and arrived right on time. We walked through our home and outside and discussed the various jobs that needed to be done. He was prompt in getting me a quote and my husband and I decided to hire him. We were under pressure to move quickly due to the relocation and Greg was fantastic to work with. He juggle our job with his other jobs. His crew were professional and left the job all cleaned up. In addition to pressure washing the outside his crew did various painting, replacement of a ceiling fan and 5 drain assemblies. All the work was completed timely and professionally. After the job Greg stated that if I needed them to come back for any additional repairs he would be here. It was a great relief to know I had a team to help me get our house ready to list!"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Routine cleaning, sealing/staining, and inspection prolong deck life and appearance.

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

There are several methods for attaching stair stringers to a deck. The best way is to bolt the stringers to the deck joists using three carriage bolts in a triangular pattern. This method offers the sturdiest fit for stairs that won’t budge. Alternatively, attach the stringers to the deck rims using lag bolts or to the posts using adjustable slope hangers.

Yes, and in some cases, frozen ground may improve the digging process for footings due to sturdier conditions. It’s easier than working in muddy conditions, which are more common in the spring. Contractors may use machinery that makes this step a breeze, so harder ground shouldn’t affect the building process.

Yes, you can build a pool deck yourself, but it takes precision, a lot of time, and many specific tools. You’ll need to create a deck plan, be careful with measurements, cut each piece of wood, secure the pieces properly, and ensure the deck meets building codes. Building a deck around a pool is a rewarding DIY, but it’s time- and labor-intensive, so thoughtfully consider your abilities and the time you have before embarking on this DIY.
