"They were excellent. They quickly made a draft that only needed 3 minor adjustments. The final product was exactly what I needed. They referred me to a structural engineer for review. The whole process took half of the time that they initially estimated. I would definitely use them again."

"We hired Cory to do measurements & create an architectural design plan for our relatively involved home remodel (kitchen, dining room, half bath, and laundry room). Cory was fantastic! He was very flexible and was able to work around our schedules. He was friendly, personable, and very professional. He wasn't bothered at all when my 4-year-old son wanted to talk to him about dinosaurs while taking his measurements. Cory was responsive to feedback & quickly made adjustments to his initial design to meet our needs. I really appreciated his keen eye - with his tips it's far better than we had initially hoped! His fee was very reasonable, better than most other architects we spoke with. I would absolutely hire him again & recommend him to friends!"

"He is very professional and does his research well. He is trustworthy. He walked me through every step of the process. Explained to me the concept of the project he was working on for me and provided drawings and documentation showing my property and possibilities. He made all the necessary contacts for me and communicated my desires and brought back my options. The rates are reasonable and you will not be disappointed with the services provided."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

The National Association of Home Builders requires repair of any foundation crack of more than one quarter of an inch, although local regulations may vary. In general, any visible crack that is growing in size, allowing water through, or that you have just noticed, is a good reason to call a structural engineer. Cracks can be a sign of a sinking foundation, so an inspection is a good idea for your peace of mind.

First, most contractors will have a structural engineer create a report and plan for your project to ensure it’s safe to cut into the load-bearing wall. The contractor will then excavate around the wall, if necessary, measure the opening—allowing for additional space to fit and level the door, and then cut the doorway out. They will likely install a steel lintel as a header over the door for support. Once the doorway is cut out, they’ll demolish the concrete using sledge hammers and masonry chisels, clean up the surrounding concrete, and seal around the door with masonry mortar.

All foundations have footers, including monolithic slabs. In some cases, the foundation itself acts as the footer, as in the case of a floating slab and a monolithic slab. With a monolithic slab, the footers—which are just the bottom-most portion of the foundation that distributes loads down to stable soil—are a part of the main slab and are constructed with a single pour.

It's safe to assume that all exterior walls are load-bearing, or at least have load-bearing characteristics. Some older homes feature porches or bump-outs that don't rest on the home's foundation. However, they still must carry the weight of the roof section they support. Walls containing floor-to-ceiling glass or other non-structural elements must use post and beam configurations to meet load-bearing criteria.

If you’re building new construction or adding onto your existing home, hiring a structural engineer is not only worth it but it’s probably required by your local building department. Structural engineers will ensure you aren’t making your home unsafe in the building process, which is crucial from a safety perspective but also a legal one. It’s also worth hiring a structural engineer if you’re making changes to structural components, like removing a load-bearing wall.
