"Ed is a great arborist! He taught me more about trees in a short time than an entire book or internet search! He helped my very large tree at an extremely reasonable price! He will be back later this year for a much needed teim. I will recommend him to everyone I know!"

"The supervisor explained the process and answered my questions thoroughly when giving me his quote. The tree climber and ground worker were in sync and stayed focused on the task. They followed their instructions and made sure I was satisfied with the results upon completion. I highly recommend Nicolas Tree Company for their tree removal expertise. Elaine, Swannanoa NC"

Customers say: Quick response

"William is great, gave us a good price and did the job by his word. A large magnolia tree was taken down and he's coming back to grind a large stump. We are very happy with the job he has done so far. We will use Cherokee Mountain Tree Service again if needed in the future. I recommend their services."

Small jobs welcome

"They did an excellent job. Arrived exactly at 9:00 a.m. and worked the entire day... I had about 12 stumps that needed to be ground down, and each one was done precisely as we discussed before starting. I would recommend this professional for any necessary stump grinding, including those in hard to reach areas."

"Devin and Landen did an amazing job! I had two large, unwieldy, dead trees that needed to come down, and they did not disappoint! They were prompt, professional, courteous, and considerate of my needs. They also went an "extra mile" and put down grass seed and some hay where there was some disturbed soil around the work site! The value for the money was top-notch, and I will definitely call them in the future for any tree work that comes up!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Hiring an arborist costs around $900 on average, with prices ranging from $250 to $2,500 or more. Some arborists charge an hourly rate, typically between $100 and $350 per hour. The final cost depends on several factors, including the type of work, the number of trees, accessibility, and whether you hire an independent arborist or a larger tree service company. When hiring, you should also consider their experience and insurance coverage.

Below are some estimated costs for common arborist jobs:

  • Small tree removal: $300 to $500

  • Large tree removal: $500 to $2,000 or more

  • Tree health assessment: $150

  • Trimming a small tree: $75 to $200

  • Trimming a large tree: $150 to $400

  • Dealing with invasive species: $150 to $1,000 or more

Generally, you should prune around 20% of an apple tree’s growth—and never more than 30%. This means that if you have a severely overgrown tree, it can take a few seasons to prune it back enough to produce the healthiest fruit.

If you’re dealing with a newly planted or juvenile tree, hold off on pruning beyond the initial shaping. Wait at least a couple of seasons into fruit production since pruning can increase the number of water sprouts and unproductive foliage.

Since summer is a busy time for tree companies, the cheapest time of year to remove a tree is during the winter. February and March are typically the prime time to hire a tree removal pro, and some homeowners living in colder climates can save around 20% off services. It depends on location and the company, but you can always shop around for the best deal.

It is possible to burn out a tree stump if it is dried out and in an area of your property with a large buffer. Drill holes in the stump and dig around the base so it burns more easily. Then, build a small campfire on top using kindling and firewood. You’ll need enough to keep the fire going for many hours to completely burn out the stump, especially if it’s large.

Monitor the fire closely to ensure it doesn’t spread, and have a hose on hand if it starts to get out of control. When the fire is out, break apart the burned stump and dig out what’s left of it.

If this sounds like a good option, learn more about how to burn a tree stump before attempting it, as it does come with risks.

Poison oak is similar to poison ivy in that it's in the same family of plants. Poison oak is identifiable by its rounded-off leaves and hairy leaf texture. Tree-climbing varieties live primarily in western states while low-growing poison oak bushes occupy the eastern states. Treat poison oak like poison ivy to get rid of it permanently.
