"The two electricians came in and began searching the fuse box and finally found the switch that wasn't working. They also performed a checkup on my electric system at my request. They did a very good job and I do recommend them for anyone who needs the help."

"We received a home security system & Ring door bell from our Kids for Christmas. Unfortunately, we didnâ t have a convenient or inconspicuous place for the modem and needed the Ring installed as well. We know nothing about electric, so I called CCEC and spoke to Patrick. He was very professional and friendly, he made me feel at ease about putting a new outlet in the wall and promised it would be tidy and behind the tv. â You wont be able to see itâ Iâ m a bit of a neat freak so this was important to me. I was so at ease with him that I also asked him to install a dimmer switch in our kitchen, again something Iâ ve always wanted but had no clue or time to do it. On appointment day Patrick showed up on time and ready to go! Jobs were done in a timely matter and the rooms looked just as they did before he started. Patricks work was very professional and so reasonably priced we asked him to come back and install a new pool light. He has done that now too, And again, great service, great pricing, as well as excellent communication (Iâ m technically challenged, he very patiently showed me how to change the colors from my phone as well as manually!) I would highly recommend CCEC, Patricks work is amazing! Patrick, Iâ m already working on a new list and will be calling you soon!!! Thank you for jobs well done!!!!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

If you have a transfer switch properly installed, the generator and main electrical power cannot feed the system at the same time. However, you should still shut off the power at your main circuit breaker panel before activating the generator. If you do that, you’ll simply need to shut off the generator and reset your circuit breaker once the local power comes back on.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

To power a central air system during a power outage, the whole-house generator will need to be at least 5,000 watts, and this number will significantly increase for larger units. Check the specific wattage requirements of your AC unit to choose the right generator size. Consider consulting a generator installer to ensure your whole-house generator meets your electrical load needs.

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. Check your local building codes or ask a local generator installer for more information about your local regulations.

A home that is 2,500 square feet will likely need a 20kW to 25kW generator. Consult your local generator installer to confirm the generator size needed to power your home before purchasing a new one. Be sure to consider how much power your necessary devices need to run.
