"It went great. Kevin is an 'owner operator' so I don't have to deal with a guy disconnected from the work coming it to check in once in a blue moon. He does stuff the right way. He communicates amazingly, we had some small 'additions' to the project that were fairly priced and didn't go much beyond the original quote (few hundred bucks on a 10k+ job). Also, these additions were caused by poor workmanship of my hardscapes company I had earlier, Kevin's team rebuilt part of their wall, re-supported the coping in one corner, and added a low retaining wall to the edge of the patio to keep the pavers from falling out into the yard (yes, previous company just had pavers end to grass with a plastic mulch bed edge holding in the patio). I was referred to Kevin through a neighbor and he has also completed a fairly large job at my neighbors house since (similar work to mine)."

Customers say: Quick response

"We just moved into our new home. It's on one acre. Between closing and actually moving in, the grass got way too tall. I hit a tree stump with my mower first time out!!! We called the Heavens Handywork guys who came by to give us an estimate, saw our situation needed immediate attention and got right on it as an emergency situation. We were so pleased with their consideration, we decided to get estimates on grinding several tree stumps and doing some landscaping work. We have already begun recommending them to our friends. Very highly recommended service. 12-2017 update: We've since hired this service to completely remove all landscaping from around the front and side of the house. They removed trees, bushes, and everything else!! They came in and within a single day, completely! cleared everything, including several large trees!! We then hired them again. This time to design and plant all new bushes and mulch the beds. We couldn't be happier with the final results. This service is confidently and highly recommended for performance and reasonable pricing."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

The best size rock for your landscaping depends on the design, as different boulders serve different purposes. If you want to group boulders to create a natural-looking cluster, you’ll need a range of sizes. Otherwise, here are some suggestions:

  • Small boulders (smaller than 12 inches across): Best for landscape edging and fire pits

  • Medium boulders (12–24 inches): Best for retaining walls and water features

  • Large boulders (more than 24 inches): Best as standalone landscaping features, steps, or walkways.

Of course, you can mix and match sizes to create a unique display.

Don’t worry if there’s a gap between cutting and planting an ideal branch. You can still cut the perfect branch when you see it. If you can’t get it in a pot or water right away, put it in a zip-top bag in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to finish the process, make a fresh cut.

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

The average cost for landscaping is around $3,500, but prices can range from as low as $200 for simple DIY projects to $14,000 or more for extensive work. Several factors influence the final price, including your geographic location, yard size, project scope, chosen materials, site preparation, and the type of landscaping involved. Professional landscaper labor costs typically range from $50 to $100 per hour.

For a smaller budget, you can focus on softscaping projects like adding mulch, flowers, and shrubs, which might only cost a few hundred dollars if you do the work yourself. A budget of around $5,000 could cover projects like a simple patio, new plants and tree trimming, or a water feature. More extensive hardscaping projects, such as pergolas, patios, and walkways, can push the budget to $14,000 or more. For example, a flower bed installation averages between $800 and $3,000, while landscape lighting installation can cost from $2,000 to $6,000.

Before you begin landscaping with rocks, put down a weed barrier or landscape fabric to prevent pesky weeds from poking through.
