We recently purchased a 2nd home on Lake James with an exterior that is 100% cedar.  The exterior was in serious need of cleaning and re-staining.  It had not been maintained; and, had a significant amount of mold staining and several areas of the trim had the original finish peeling off.

We contracted with Mike and Crystal to prep and re-stain the exterior of our home.  Throughout the process, Mike demonstrated thoroughness, competency and responsibility.  Mike and Crystal took personal responsibility to ensure they delivered a quality product.  Mike kept his commitments and did not compromise his work product even when faced with the stripping process taking more time than he expected.  He completed the project per the schedule he committed.

Mike demonstrated a high attention to detail in the finishing process and ensured the project was completed to my satisfaction.  The home looks beautiful...we could not be happier.

I solicited bids from several paint contractors and evaluated several before selecting Mike.  His pricing was very competitive versus several other contractors; but, I never observed where Mike cut corners.

I would definitely recommend MIke's Painting and will plan to use Mike again when we have painting needs.

"Everything about this job went well. Arte Bella painted my kitchen cabinets (they do AMAZING things to outdated cabinets) back in the fall so I knew what to expect from Maria and her crew. Maria came to my house on a Saturday to do the estimate. She helped me with paint selection. I generally use satin but Maria suggested eggshell since the walls (1980 construction basement level) were far from perfect. However, my walls are MUCH closer to perfect now than I could've dreamed. I am most impressed with the walls in the area that I had wallpapered. They were quite a mess because I didn't use regular wallpaper (it was "brown bag" walls) and I didn't use sizing. Plus...I used stain to color the paper. Due to the nature of brown bag walls, there were some areas where there were multiple layers of thick brown contractor's paper. Now you would never know the walls had ever been damaged. The hallway is small, but required a lot of time and skill to return them to pretty much as new condition. The den/kitchen area had some waves in the walls that I didn't expect could be corrected. There were also a few rough generally rough places and I'm sure more flaws than I noticed.
I did a complete color change from a deep wine color to a fresh light blue-gray. This required the walls to be primed  and painted with two coats of color.  I'm not sure if they did one or two coats of primer. I think they did one over the areas that required dry wall work to set everything and then one more over the entire room.
I was at work during the process since I trust Maria and her crew. I recognized Lou from the work I had done in the fall. I met Tonya the first morning. I know there were a couple of other people who came to help but it was after I left for the day. Maria came to check on the progress of the job each day. She has wonderful suggestions for how you can use to paint to refresh your home for a relatively small investment. I'm hoping to have my old (UGLY) drop ceiling painted soon.
I did get a quote from another painted and Maria's was higher. However, the first price did not include supplies. I know that multiple gallons of primer and paint were used plus all the supplies needed to correct dry wall issues. For the quality of the work, I feel the price is more than fair. I will call Maria again the next time I need painting work done.

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Satin paint is generally considered a better choice for woodwork—including trim, baseboards, cabinets, and doors—than flatter finishes like eggshell or matte. Its soft sheen enhances architectural details and stands up well to frequent cleaning and daily wear. Compared to eggshell and matte finishes, satin is more durable for high-touch areas because it is less porous and doesn't absorb dirt as easily. Matte finishes, in particular, are prone to scuffs and are harder to clean, making them less practical for surfaces like doors and cabinets.

Yes, staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan, typically by five to 10 years. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it can still fall victim to moisture, sun exposure, and rot over time. Applying a treatment creates a protective shield that helps prevent splintering, fading, and decay, preserving the wood's strength and appearance. A combination stain and sealer often provides the best protection, as it soaks into the wood grain rather than just sitting on top. This offers superior defense against UV damage and rot and lasts longer than a sealer alone. To maintain the wood's natural look, consider using a near-translucent stain. You should plan to reapply the stain or sealer every two to three years.

For homes in areas with extreme weather, high heat, or intense sun exposure, high-quality acrylic paint is the best option. Acrylic paint is durable, resistant to both heat and cold, and provides a protective barrier with excellent UV resistance. For best results, look for acrylics that contain natural earth pigments, which are better suited for resisting sun damage. While oil-based paint is also durable, it can be prone to fading in high heat and can become too viscous to apply easily in cold temperatures. Additionally, choosing a neutral or light color like gray, beige, or white can help, as these colors absorb less heat than darker shades.

Beyond liquid rubber, homeowners can use sealants, stains, membranes, or tapes as waterproofing options. Oil-based or water-based sealants soak into the wood, creating a moisture-resistant barrier. Waterproofing stains—available in transparent, semi-transparent, and solid colors—add both protection and style to your deck. For heavy-duty waterproofing, deck membranes and waterproof tapes can be applied under the deck boards to direct water away from the structure below. Whatever method you choose, clean and prep the deck first to ensure the best, longest-lasting results.

Ultimately, overapplication of stain can compromise the deck's appearance, durability, and longevity. It may result in an uneven finish, with excess stain pooling, dripping, or drying into thick patches. It can also obscure the wood's natural grain and texture, detracting from the desired aesthetic. Moreover, excessive staining may not fully penetrate the wood, leading to poor adhesion and premature wear. Additionally, thick layers of stain are prone to peeling, cracking, and blistering as they struggle to bond with the surface.
