I have been a plumber for 13 years working on new, remodel and service calls in all types of homes. This experience with my schooling and certifications for home inspections makes me understand many issues common found in a home. Every home will need some maintenance, and I have the knowledge to let a homeowner know issues that can be common and important to focus on when buying or selling a home.

"They said all subcontractors they tried to hire wouldn't do it for that low of price. I suppose, since I was informed it would require 200 gallons of stripper at $50 per gallon and 200 gallons of stain at $50 per gallon to do my house...that alone happens to come up to $20,000. Although they claim to give an itemized list of materials, I never did. Step one is protection of landscape, until chemicals are place directly on the lawn, then I'm told "what can you expect with this much chemical?" and step two is to ensure the wood isn't feathered during pressure wash, which is was badly damaged. Out of site, out of mind seems to be a general theory, as well as complain about caulk color, and not even follow through with stripping and caulking (just replacing that which was missing). I was also appalled when they made it seem that $800 window screens and adding new landscaping mulch was doing me a favor...since they failed to protect the landscaping and never removed the screens before blasting cedar pulp into the screens. I honestly don't think they know what they were doing, and just pretended they did."

Mr Electric of the Sioux Empire provides electrical services for homes and businesses. From minor repairs to upgrades of your home or businesses electrical system. We are locally owned and operated and we are natives to the area.

"We used this company to complete the electrical in our unfinished basement. HUGE mistake! The plumbers were super nice but we went through several of them so the quote kept changing which is frustrating. They apparently have a high turnover. Beware, the owner and the office staff are complete a--holes. Some of the rudest people I've ever dealt with. The owner will insult and call names if something doesn't go his way despite what is in the contract. They must be hurting for money because they demanded we pay them our small balance even when the work wasn't done! We refused to pay until the work was completed per our contract so he harassed us by phone and text for months. I told him I would call the police if he kept it up but he didn't care. I got to the point where I wouldn't even answer my door unless it was someone we knew. Then, while installing drywall we learned of a couple mistakes so we called to have them fixed. Instead of being understanding, he insulted us and threatened to put a lien on OUR house for payment of work THEY didn't do correctly. His behavior was insane! The plumber, Ryan, was very nice and helpful. He answered all my questions. If I could have hired just him independently instead of going through this awful company, I would have. The owner should learn how to treat people! I would NOT recommend them for any work at all considering how much stress, anxiety and fear the owner caused our family. Steer clear unless you're ok with being treated like trash. I'm sure the owner will comment on this review and go on the attack because that's what he does."

Home Inspection questions, answered by experts

Waiving a home inspection could be beneficial if you’re buying a home in a hot location where the seller has many other offers to consider, especially if other buyers are willing to waive the inspection. However, it’s not usually a good idea to waive an inspection, even on new construction. Inspections can identify problems that could cost thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars, so a formal inspection is always worthwhile. If you’re having a new home built, a pre-drywall inspection is often the most valuable, but a final inspection before you close is also a good idea.

The telltale signs that your home is ready for repointing include visibly damaged bricks, crumbling bricks, flaking bricks, loose mortar, cracked mortar, gaps between brick and mortar, leaking inside your home, and visible water damage. Consider repointing when going over brick house pros and cons if you're buying a new home. Repointing is also a good idea if you plan to paint, acid wash, or stain your brick home, as it will give you a good base for coloration and prevent repairs after the work is done.

You can test your ductwork by hiring a technician to attach a vacuum to the ductwork near the HVAC unit and put the vent system under pressure. Your pro can use a duct leak tester to measure the amount of pressure that's escaping.

You can also do a DIY test using an incense stick or smoke pencil. With the HVAC system running, pass the stick or pencil across the ductwork. Pay attention to the movement of the smoke. When you notice it changing, it could be a sign there’s a leak or bad connection in the duct.

Homeowners insurance may cover damaged floor joists, depending on your policy. Insurance typically covers issues from storms, fires, or water damage from burst pipes. However, don't expect your insurance company to cover damage from wear and tear, poor maintenance, or termites.

There are many things to look for when buying a brick house. Here are some of the key things you should pay close attention to.

  • Lintels: Look for cracks, holes, displacement, or corrosion

  • Mortar: Check to see if the mortar is old and crumbling, in need of repointing, or new. Also check to see if the mortar has a professional finish.

  • Walls: Check along each side of the house. If a wall is bowing outward, this indicates a severe issue such as foundation damage or that the walls are ready to fall.

  • Cracks: If there are stair step cracks in the brickwork, this indicates an unstable foundation.
