"EXCELLENT craftsmanship. Super high quality work. Very communicative - never ghosted us or left us in the dark. Five stars on all of that!! The only reason I don't give 5 stars overall is the timeline. We were originally quoted 8-10 weeks for our screened porch and it took a lot longer. There were things out of his control that contributed to that, so we understood. And again, he kept us in the loop. He also built us a new shed during that time and that slowed down the progress of the porch as well. We loved Calvin and would be happy to have him do more work for us."

"Ben and his crew were amazing. We redid our garage entry to make it a mudroom / laundry / pantry / storage area. The job went quickly and we collaborated on solutions to our needs. At the end, we had custom cabinets, an awesome custom shelf on rollers, a stacked laundry, a hall tree, and more storage than we thought possible. All finished with great shiplap. They also took a HUGE room upstairs over our garage and gave us an extra laundry for the kids, a media room, and a fourth bedroom with walk in closet. They also gave us an extra storage area in the media room since the builder blocked off lots of usable space. The last project was giving our master a makeover. They moved 3 doors, moved our bathroom door, added a linen closet to the bathroom, moved the entry to the closet from the bathroom to the master and gave us a cool entrance to the bedroom. If you have a job to do, they'll do it right, work together to decide how things should look, and do an darn good job. All while respecting your budget. Overall, HIRE THEM!! Ben is very outgoing and fun to talk with. Can't say enough good things! Thanks Ben! We'll see you again for our next projects in the future."

I thought they did a real good job. It does not smell or anything. If it was tall enough it looks like a room you could be in to live in, but it is our crawl space. They are really good. We get an annual checkup and their services are kind of expensive, but my husband checks every time it rains and now the water does not sit underneath the house or mess up our foundation. We got a military discount and they check the humidifier to make sure it is doing what it is supposed to do for about $99.

"Mike and Crystal were very professional from the first phone contact through the completion of the work. They showed up on time, their work was neat and they worked very efficiently. My windows were in pretty bad shape. They really took their time and prepped them very well which showed in the finished product. When asked to redo or touch up anything it was done without question. In the end we received a very good paint job on a timely basis and at a competitive price. I have already recommended Mike's Painting to others in my neighborhood and would use him again for future painting needs.

Subcontractors questions, answered by experts

It is technically possible to draw your own blueprints, but the process is extremely involved and really demands help from an expert. A professional architect has an understanding of design elements, interior design, the functionality of different rooms in a home, and how everything from furniture, outlets, and light switches should be laid out to serve you and your family best. Hiring an architect for blueprints can get expensive, but it’s the most responsible way to begin a new construction project. If you’re keen on DIYing, you could consider starting the process and then having a professional take over.

Typically, general remodeling involves architects, contractors, interior designers, electricians, plumbers, and sometimes structural engineers. Each plays a role in bringing the project from concept to completion.

Blueprints are generally available for houses built after the early 1900s. Before then, detailed building schematics like blueprints were rarely used and even more rarely saved. If you have an older house and need blueprints, you can have a new set drawn up by an architect or draftsperson.

The longest part of building a custom home is the design phase. It takes multiple professionals and a ton of work to bring your vision for your dream home to life while sticking to a homebuilding budget and also ensuring everything is built to code. Expect the design phase for a custom home build to take six months to a year.

Mid-century modern architecture was a popular home style throughout the U.S. from the 1950s to 1970s. Most homes feature a wide and symmetrical floor plan with low-sloped roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows. Its minimalism and balanced appearance are back on the home style scene, particularly when maximizing sunlight, airflow, and a blend with the home's natural surroundings.
