"I worked with Blake Bowden, the owner of Top Rail Fence Anderson, to create a custom wood privacy fence that met HOA standards on a property with inclines. The house is on the only level area of the property, with the grade sloping away from the house on both sides and then up a steep hill in the backyard. Blake helped me design the fence, handled all of the paperwork with the HOA, and sent a fantastic two-person crew to complete the job. The men who completed the work were conscientious, kind, and hard-working. They dug the posts (on an incline), set the concrete, and cut boards to size to create a beautiful fence that follows the grade. I continue to receive compliments on the fence and recommend Top Rail Fence Anderson to anyone who needs their services."

"Ergeon did an amazing job in our backyard, removing our old 4ft picket fence and installing our new 6ft privacy fence all in one day. This also included installation of a custom 10ft wide double gate. I highly recommend Ergeon to anyone needing fence work."

Customers say: Quality work

"Wow! Doug is the most amazing contractor I have ever worked with. He did a beautiful job on our front porch re-build and was truly helpful in offering suggestions as I was not really sure what I wanted to do as far as materials and design. He was always in touch, he did exactly what he said he was going to do and he did it when he said he would. Plus his work is absolutely beautiful and professionally done. We love our new porch - thank you so much Doug!!"

Fencing questions, answered by experts

Yes, in most places. A front yard fence is allowed by local zoning laws more often than not, but it always helps to check before building just to make sure. There may be restrictions around how tall the fence can be, what it can be made from, or where it can be built.

Post depth for shadowbox fences should be at least two feet deep plus an additional foot for every foot of fence height above four feet. For a standard six-foot fence, this means a minimum depth of 3 feet. This depth helps to protect the structural integrity of your fence in the face of wind, soil movement, and seasonal ground shifts

A chain link fence typically lasts between 15 and 20 years, but with proper maintenance, it can last for 30 years or more. To preserve the fence, it's important to keep the mesh wire tight, which can be done with a come-along tool every 6 to 12 months. Investing in a fence with a galvanized, powder-coated, or vinyl-coated finish can increase its lifespan to 20 to 30 years and reduce maintenance needs, as these coatings provide extra protection against the elements.

The standard height for a split rail fence is three or four feet. This height requires two to three horizontal rails, making it ideal for homeowners wanting a budget-friendly split rail fence. If you’re hoping to contain agile livestock or animals like dogs, geese, or goats, you may prefer to install a six-foot tall fence with four or five rails or a four-foot-tall fence with three horizontal rails. This will help prevent animals from climbing, crawling, or jumping through the rails.

When choosing wood for a fence, consider your budget and geographic region. The most popular and common types of wood are cedar, redwood, and pressure-treated pine. Cedar is a top choice due to its natural durability, resistance to rot and insects, and budget-friendly price. Redwood is another durable, tried-and-true option, though it is typically more expensive. Pressure-treated wood, such as pine, is also a widely used and popular alternative. These materials are readily available at most hardware stores, which makes future repairs and replacements easier. Their accessibility and long-lasting performance make them excellent choices for most fence installation projects.
