"I would highly recommend Brookside Plumbing. They did a great job in replacing my shower valve and connecting my home to city water but putting in a separate valve so I still have access to my well when needed."

Small jobs welcome

"I had an emergency, broken pipe under kitchen sink, and they didn't have an opening till after the weekend. Ace plumbing contacted their techs and one of them said he could come out immediately. He showed up less than 30 minutes later and replaced the pipe. I live on the bottom floor of a condo and there was an obstruction in the main drain line that was backing up into multiple kitchen sinks. Roto-Rooter didn't show for 5 more hours. Ace plumbing tech was friendly, knowledgeable, quick and helpful."

Drain Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Food grease, soap buildup, paper products, and tree roots often cause serious clogs.

Yes, you can pour water down the toilet to help it flush. For each flush, you’ll need 1 to 2 gallons of water for newer toilets or 3 to 5 gallons of water for older toilets. Rather than dumping the entire bucket in all at once, pour the water in slowly for the best results. If you’re pouring water down the toilet to help it flush after a clog, only use 1 gallon of hot water.

If you try a drain snake and various DIY methods for unclogging drains to no avail, bring in a professional plumber to assess the situation. Also, if multiple drains in your home are backing up or you smell sewage, a visit from a plumber is best. You can expect your drain cleaning costs to fall around $250, and this can include an assessment of what’s caught in your plumbing and if there’s a larger, underlying problem. You should also consider calling a pro if you need to snake a toilet, as DIYing this could lead to a cracked fixture.

Clearing typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on the blockage size and location.

If your drain doesn’t have metal crosshairs or crossbars, you should use a tub drain extractor. These tools create a grip on the drain so you can turn it using a 1/2-inch ratchet drive, drain key, or wrench. Your drain may not have crosshairs if it's old and broken.
