"Mr. Calvo came out to my home and thoroughly investigated the framing of the foundation, the walls, and the design plans for our kitchen renovation which included removing walls. This allowed us to provide the GC with a certified engineering plan for all necessary changes for the project to succeed and pass inspections. We received a certified carefully detailed diagram specifying the required changes. The plan drawing called for the contractor to communicate back any discrepancies. Months later the project is in process and Mr. Calvo quickly acknowledged my emailed changes and made modifications to his plan design so the GC could proceed without any delay to the project. I am very pleased with the services that Mr. Calvo and his firm, IDE, have provided."

We are licensed Engineers in NC, SC, and VA. All structural reports graphically define structural deficiencies and include structural repair specifications.

"I would not hire this engineer again. He was referred by Ram Jack in 2009 for a structural foundation assessment and signed off on them installing a pier at a 5 foot depth in soil on top of a rock that was not load bearing. 10 years later Ram Jack refuses to fix the situation per another certified engineers assessment under their lifetime warranty, and his personal liability expires after 6 years. Either he is incompetent, or he is doing people favors."

"We needed our pool opened earlier than usual because we were selling our home. The company that has serviced our pool for the past several years has downsized and no longer offers that service. We asked friends who they used to service their pools and we received an enthusiastic recommendation for Carolina Pool King. They were out at our pool within a few days and had the pool completely clean and ready for inspection WEEKS more rapidly than any other pool company I've ever used. Although they weren't the least expensive, they ABSOLUTELY are the best pool company we've ever used. We no longer have a pool, but without reservation I will recommend Carolina Pool King to anyone in need of a company to service their swimming pool."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Dormers must be able to bear the load of their own construction and the added window. The style of the dormer, however, will determine where the weight loads onto your home's structure. A gable dormer bears the weight on the side walls whereas a shed dormer bears it on the front walls.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

A split-level home is one that has several staggered floors connected by short staircases, while a split floor plan separates the primary bedroom from the rest of the bedrooms. Split floor plans are most often found in single-story homes, while split-level homes are always at least two stories.

Most structural engineers offer free quotes, regardless of the size of the job. For simple inspections when buying or selling a home, engineers typically charge a flat fee that may be based solely on your home’s foundation type and square footage. For larger projects, like new construction and major home renovations, an engineer will either perform an analysis of your project and site and provide you with a formal estimate, or they will do a more in-depth assessment and in-person site inspection before coming up with a per-hour or per-project cost estimate. In most cases, the estimate is free.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.
