"Jason worked extremely hard to remove the old paint on our back patio. It was very resistant to both the stripper chemicals used and the power washing efforts. The pointing of the brick on the front patio came out well."

"Ernesto and his family are absolutely delightful people. Very pleasant and personable. It was a pleasure doing business with them. I can't say enough good about them. My story... I was in a bind. I had previously hired a crew to clean up and re-mulch the planting beds , trim hedges, and general clean-up and trimming. They butchered just about everything they touched. My yard and plantings were a mess. I had an appraiser scheduled in just a few days, and was desperate to find help. So I went online and ended up signing up with Home Advisor. Within an hour, Ernesto called me. I explained my situation and needs. I think he felt sorry for me because he re-arranged his work load and was at my house a couple of hours later. They set right to work and worked diligently util dusk, and were back early the next morning hard at work. They were very accommodating, and even picked up and hauled off several large limbs that had been knocked down in a recent storm. When they were finished, I was amazed at how good my yard and planting beds looked. The care and effort put forth by them was something you don't see much of anymore. the final result was worthy of a postcard. Ernesto lists several other services on his card. I plan to call him in the future. Robert Hand Kingstree, S,C."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Deck repairs cost around $800 to $3,500 . However, your cost depends on the type and severity of the repair, as well as the type of decking material you have. Other factors, like location and labor costs, impact the price, too. Boards and railings are the priciest parts of a deck to repair, while loose stairs are less expensive to fix.

Finding a reputable deck builder should start with speaking with a local company and asking for samples of past work and references. You can review the company’s workmanship and speak with past customers to learn what the customer service was like throughout the process. It’s also a good idea to read online reviews and check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website to see if the company has a history of customer complaints. If you can get a referral from a family member or friend, that’s another great option.

Floating decks are a cost-effective and versatile option, but they come with some compromises. Since they sit on smaller footings instead of being deeply anchored, they’re more likely to shift over time, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or freeze-thaw conditions. Their low-to-the-ground design makes them more susceptible to moisture buildup and potential water damage.

Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.

The overhang, or nosing, of deck steps is another area that will be covered in building code requirements. The noses on your deck steps should have a minimum overhang of ¾ inch. For safety, usability, and code compliance, the nosing of deck steps should not extend past 1¼ inches.
