I thought they did a great job!

A problem arose with my project done by First Call, as verified by another contractor. First Call will not address it. I will have to hire another company to correct the problem. Our working relationship with First Call has ended extremely poorly.

Don Johnson and his team did a fantastic job on our new detached garage and coach house. We had multiple groups come out to review the project and quote the work, but Don's experience, candor and general attitude won First Call the project. The price was right as well! We highly recommend working with First Call. In today's building environment, you want a pro that can not only start the job, but finish. We ran into some unforeseen delays with the county and utility departments, but Don was persistent and stayed the course and completed this project in a good timeframe. We are extremely happy with the design and details that went into the buildout. We wanted the detached garage and coach house to feel like it was apart of the main house that was built in 1973. From the slope of the roofline to the siding and cottage windows, it all flows seamlessly and we have received multiple comments about this. Again, very highly recommend Don and his team and we feel frankly feel blessed to have worked with them for this project. Thanks Don!

Don is a fair, honest, practical, and professional businessperson. He is genuinely committed to providing quality work at a good price. We had him build a sunroom, screened porch, and shed, and significantly remodel our basement. We are quite pleased with the results and have no doubt we got more than our money's worth.

We are extremely pleased with the multiple projects First Call construction did for us. The first project was to install a drainage system for our 4 acre pond. Donald Johnson and his crew did an excellent job with the project at a very reasonable cost. They went above and beyond what I was expecting. That's when I found out that Donald did home remodeling as well. We were remodeling our 11,000 sq ft. House so that we could place it on the market for sale. We agreed to the work that needed to be done, the price, and the time frame for the job to be competed. Donald and his very professional crews completed all the work, on time and also with a quality that was above our expectation. he also pointed out things that needed improvement that we had initially not included in the agreement. He completed extra projects that needed to be done, without increasing the total price of the project. I give Donald and First Call Construction my highest recommendation and I strongly recommend them for any home remodeling project you are considering. We had an old deck torn out and a new screened porch plus deck installed. It was an amazing job at a very reasonable price. Mr. Johnson was great to work with and had great crews working for him. The work was done in a good time frame (two weeks) and the work is marvelous! We couldn't have asked for better! We would highly recommend Mr. Johnson and First Call Construction for your project!

If it were possible to select a higher rating than 5, I would. We had our second (and absolute last!) child and we're in desperate need of another bedroom. Desperate. Don came over to meet with me and offered more information and a more positive budgetary outlook than three other contractors I've met with over the last few years regarding this same project. Not only did Don agree to the scope of work, but he delivered way beyond that. Whereas we thought we would need to use the existing structure to make the job possible, Don's commitment to quality and his longstanding relationships with his subs allowed us to completely start from scratch without impacting the budget. I could absolutely go on and on regarding the five star level of communication and support we were afforded from start to finish. It has been a completely painless process. And as someone who works in commercial construction, I know better than most how uncomfortable construction can be. Don was our buffer at all times. I could not be more grateful for meeting Don when we did. Our life is overwhelming. This addition was not. And for that, and FINALLY getting this small boy out of my room, I will be eternally grateful!

Don built for us a handicap accessible, master bedroom, bath, and walk-in closet on the first floor of our home. Don was fully engaged in every step of the entire process from developing the building plans to ensuring the final details of the project were completed. The project was completed on time, for the agreed upon price and was done in a very professional manner. We are very pleased with his expertise and quality of workmanship. We would highly recommend First Step to any homeowner.

I needed an addition built and had a hard time finding a contractor to come and give me an estimate in Powhatan - I got a couple over the phone estimates and knew that would not work. I started asking friends for recommendations and thank goodness I found First Call Construction Services! The owner, Donald Johnson, called back right away and set up an appointment time to come walk the property and advise me on what I could have done. The addition was to be built onto my daughters house, so Mr. Johnson had 2 picky females to contend with. He was extremely easy to talk with and knowledgeable about any questions we had. I liked that he wrote up a contract with a step by step schedule and price estimate. One important thing we wanted was for the addition to blend in and look like it had always been here. Mr. Johnson was very conscientious about that and even though the addition was my project and for me, he was very considerate of the fact that my daughter owned the house he was building onto. He was at the work site daily and made sure things were going smoothly and being done on schedule, never got impatient, he treated his crews respectfully. All of his subcontractors were polite, friendly and professional--and performed excellent work, down to every detail. I asked for a windowsill on a large window, and I got an expertly built custom windowsill that resembles a mantle! The entire addition, inside and out, is beautiful, it is exactly what I wanted! It was important to Mr. Johnson that my daughter and I were happy with the project. He is a true, honest businessman. I would not hesitate to call on First Call Construction Services. Thank you!

We wanted an addition added to an existing bathroom including a complete remodel. Don J. did a complete redesign/renovation of our master bath with amazing attention to detail. He is highly professional and completely trustworthy with an incredible talent for designing. We had interviewed other renovation companies and read reviews. We also knew the horror stories from friends and neighbors - unfortunately, some first hand, about selecting the wrong one! None of that with the First Call! Don and all of his subs were always professional, patient and courteous, and always arrived when they said they would! We would definitely use this company again and would recommend him to anyone without reservation. A few weeks into our project, Don had a serious family emergency, but even dealing with that, our project remained on schedule. He far exceeded all of our expectations and we would immediately turn to him again if we were to have any additional renovation needs. He is truly full service -- from creating the design to following through in making it exactly (and in some cases, better) than was planned. He works extremely hard to be sure that you get exactly what you want and to be sure all goes smoothly.

Don was amazing at managing all aspects of the project. He delivered on time and handled each stage of the project from digging the footers, pouring the concrete, building the frame, finishing the exterior and everything else in between. Definitely recommend this company.

First Call Construction completed an extensive renovation to our home, in including enclosure of a deck into our family room, basement extension and upgrade, and building of a screen porch. Throughout this entire process, Mr. Johnson has been extremely attentive to customer expectations and wonderful to work with. His quality of work, particularly attention to details, is excellent. He also has an artistic side which which is very helpful when seeking his advice for architectural design and selection of items, ranging from fixtures to paint colors.

Mr. Johnson's promptness in contacting me regarding my family's need was only exceeded by his enthusiasm for our satisfaction with his work. He was personable, diligent, communicative, understanding and kindly patient with me and with his crew members, a real gentleman. He apparently selects only the best workers in their respective trades because the completed project is absolutely excellent---beyond reproach. We could not be more pleased with the product of the labors of Mr. Johnson and the entire First Call Construction Services staff. Our sincere thanks to each and every one who had a part in completing our job, especially the fine young men who installed the tongue and groove wood. Kudos!!

We are extremely pleased with our addition! We had special requirements due to our homeowners association rules and our need for soundproofing. Mr. Johnson was very patient with our constant questions, special requests and last minute changes. Our project was completed on time, he communicated with us every day, let us know what work was being done and what to expect the next day. We highly recommend Mr. Johnson if you need a contractor!

The personal service of Don Johnson and his subs used for this project are very good. Would have been 5 stars for entire job except that punch list has been addressed slowly . (General Contractor's absence due to illness of family member residing out of state.) Nevertheless, I am very glad he was my contractor for this remodel. It looks super!

First Call Construction is the best! They were extremely qualified and experienced, the level of work was the very best, the project proceeded according to the projected timeline, all workers were competent, courteous and very hard working. Changes and problems were handled easily and effectively. Cost was very reasonable. I will absolutely hire them again for my next project, and recommend them highly.

I recently hired First Call Construction for new siding and new windows for my home that was in dire need of repairs and replacements. Mr. Johnson has been absolutely wonderful to work with durning this project. He was very informative and patient with my requests. He was very fair and considerate of my budget and even completed work that went above and beyond the contract agreement, including an extra window, wood root repair, vinyl lining of windows and door frames that were not replaced, even partial vinyl lining of my front porch! Mr. Johnson's workers are great; they completed the job with quality, speed, and cleanliness. I look forward to working with this company again and would definitely recommend to others.

Don Johnson did an excellent job from listening closely to what we were looking for in an outdoor room (complete with a beautiful stone fireplace), working with the County of Henrico to ensure all code requirements were met, adjusting the project to meet our evolving "wants" and then delivering a quality product that has amazed our friends. We are very happy with the work product, the attention to detail and the fact that Don met with us throughout the project as often as we wanted, answered all of our questions and took complete ownership of the project. We will use First Call again in the future.

Don Johnson has just completed a rather involved addition/remodeling project to our home, which included a bathroom update, new sunroom addition, large covered back deck beautiful new covered front porch and replacement of sidewalks. Since helping with the design, he has from day one been on top of the job supervising and coordinating top quality craftsmen, using nothing but top of the line materials. He consistently provided excellent communication to me throughout the process. Most impressive was his vision for the design of the project and his "can do" attitude when others seem to focus on the difficulties and challenges. He constantly went the extra mile, and in the end we felt very good about the process and are thrilled with the outcome that really has enhanced the beauty and enjoyment of our home.

This contractor built a detached 2-car garage for my primary residence. The quality of the work was very high and he met every requirement within the scope of work. In addition, we went beyond the contract to satisfy my family���s needs. He���s experience was one of the key traits that led to the success of this build.

Don Johnson of First Call Construction contacted me immediately and offered to build a 832 sq.ft. 2-car garage from start to finish . Don's credentials, references and experience were excellent, so we hired him. We told Don up-front that we were "high maintenance" customers that demanded perfection and he replied that he would take on the project and promised he wouldn't leave till we were absolutely satisfied. There were relatively minor hiccups along the way and Don was true to his word: He treated us and our project very professionally and was not satisfied with the results till we were. Don was personally involved in every facet of the construction. For example, when my wife wasn't happy with the exact position of a side window, Don had his carpenters re-frame and position it approximately a foot from where it had been. At no extra cost. And when we asked the electrician to add a dusk-to-dawn photocell for our carriage lights, Don approved the addition without charge to us. He also installed gutters and down-spouts on our garage without charge (my experience is that most general contractors tack-on additional charges every time you request a variance from the original contract). We are enthusiastically excited about our new garage. The total cost for the project was several thousand less than other contractors wanted. We're very happy we hired First Call and Don Johnson. On a scale of 1 to 10, we'd rate Don a solid 12!

Value for money is the key issue with this company. Not to many around to do this work for the price. When doing new construction Don is absolutely fabulous. The last 1% percent of job is the most difficult to make sure you are satisfied before final payment.

very easy to work with, very flexible and patient, good crew, they really did a good job cleaming up after themselves which is hard to find.

I have built 3 major additions to my house and I have never found anybody better for the money. I have never worked with anyone better that is good with dealing with me changing my mind. He is tremendous with foundation work as well. He is really tremendously experienced for any issue that may occur during additions and renovation work.
