"They were able to replace the skylight in less than 2 weeks after the quote. They did a good job and make the finish on the inside look good. A few weeks later, there was a heavy rain and my new skylight is no longer leaking like my old one that was replaced."

"From start to finish working with the guys at Carolina Energy Conservation was a pleasure. Jimmy stopped by first to check that we had adequate insulation and weren't losing energy through leaky doors and windows. Then Jimmy and Tom stopped by to design the system we needed. We were lucky enough to get a quick install date and a week before install Ricardo stopped by to check the layout and ensure the integrity of the roof. Install day arrived and Ricardo, Tim and Eddie showed up on time and ready to install. Over the next four days they installed the panels (with the help of Nick and George) and all associated wiring on the roof, in the attic and in the garage. This was in 90 degree weather and I was glad I didn't have to do it. Each day when they left everything was cleaned up and you couldn't tell they had been there except for the work that was performed. They did an extremely clean install from the roof to the garage with no exposed wiring or cuts in the walls. Finally on Day five the electric company came and switched the meter the inspector came and approved everything and we were up and running. The system has been operating flawlessly since and I can't wait for my first electric bill or should I say lack there of. After the first week of operation in 90 degree weather we have produced slightly more energy than we have used. I'm very happy I decided on Solar. I believe I'll save some money, keep a little carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and maybe save a little of the earth's resources for my grandchildren. I'm also very happy I chose Carolina Energy Conservation to do the work, they were professional, on time and a pleasure to deal with."

"It was the best price, but when they arrived they were short on materials and didn’t bring the correct ladders. From the ground looking up i would say awesome job. Later after climbing on the roof we found issues with the install, and sloppy craftsmanship. Non responsive when asked to come back out and clean up project. Would not recommend or use again."

"

It went very well.  I am a returning customer.  I had my roof done in Feb. of 2015 and was very satisfied.  When I had a car hit my house, I knew immediately who I wanted to fix it.  As in the past, the crew was very professional and hardworking.  Brian and Sarah are the best.  They followed up on the work-site to make sure everything is progressing as expected. Brian was very good about explaining all the details of the project before beginning to ensure I understood what they were able to fix with the funds available.  Sarah immediately returned my text when I told her what happened and her and Brian came over within an hour and they were on their way to their son's game.  Can't say enough positive things about Atlantic Coastal.  I still have work that I need to get done on my house, and when I get the funds to do it:), I know who I will be calling.  Thanks again Atlantic Coastal!

"James was very polite and professional when I talked to him about going out and taking a look at the property. He called me back very quickly for a quote and description of the repairs that were to be done. He was there within 3 days to do the work and finished that day. The price was very reasonable and he did not try haggle me into repairing the entire roof, which prior to me calling him, two other roofers told me the entire roof must be replaced. I knew the entire roof did not need to be replaced at the time. James is a very professional and trusworthy contractor that I would recommend to anyone."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can install skylights on an existing roof, and it’s a common service that many homeowners opt for, especially on older homes built when skylights weren’t as prevalent. The installation process will be a bit more involved, and the design and planning process will take longer, meaning you’ll pay more to install a skylight on an existing roof than you would in new construction. The process involves cutting a hole in the roof, moving rafters, if necessary, and installing and sealing around the skylight.

Fixed skylights are by far the most popular type. Because skylights can be pretty high up on your ceiling, fixed (rather than operable) skylights remove some maintenance from the equation. Plus, you don’t have to constantly worry if you shut your skylight fully the last time you opened it or if you’re going to find a leak later on during a rainy day.

Leaks are the top concern for skylights, often due to improper installation or worn-out seals. Over time, water can seep in and cause major damage to your home’s ceilings and walls. Other common issues include condensation, which leads to mold, as well as physical damage from weather or debris. If they’re not sealed properly, skylights can also bring unwanted heat in the summer or cold in the winter, affecting your home’s energy efficiency and tacking on extra dollars to your bills.

The decision to remove a skylight depends on your specific circumstances and preferences. There are several reasons why you might consider removing a skylight, such as extensive damage, a desire for better insulation, or the need to change the room's layout. Additionally, if the skylight is causing leaks or other issues, it may be necessary to remove and replace it (which can incur additional skylight installation costs). It's important to assess your specific situation and consult with professionals if needed to make an informed decision.

To maintain a skylight and ensure its performance over time, regular maintenance is required. This includes periodically cleaning the glass and frame to remove dirt, debris, and condensation. It is also crucial to inspect the seals and flashing at least once a year for any signs of wear, degradation, or leaks, paying special attention after heavy storms. Ensure that the drainage system is clear to prevent water buildup and potential leaks. Address minor issues like cracks promptly and consider occasional resealing to prevent drafts and moisture problems. While energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings or double glazing may require less upkeep, periodic professional servicing can help keep any skylight in optimal condition.
