"Hershberger Gates did a great job adding a Ghost Control system to my driveway gates. I had an old system that failed and had lived with manually opening and closing the gates. I was hesitant to give the job to Hershberger because I was a bit out of his physical jurisdiction, but Spencer persuaded me that he was the right guy for the job and said he’d have no problem servicing me if I had an issue (although he said the Ghost System is very reliable). Spencer said he’d be at my place at 6:30 am…I thought he was joking…he wasn’t…and he was right on time. The system operates great… very substantial….the remotes are fantastic and the Ghost app on my iphone is even better. He thought he’d be here for 6-7 hours and he was done in approximately 4. Great honest guys! I’m a very happy customer in Asheville, NC."

"Valdez Landscaping was AWESOME, they were quick, fair, helpful and reputable. I definitely recommend them for your Landscape needs. They even worked with my neighbors when they were at my home to see if they an help with grading and digging for a partial inground pool. We also had issues with out fence and they were quick to come over and offer their professional advise, even having Valdez Fencing - Brother come over and recommend how to repair. Overall really happy and trust any recommendation they provide for all our 12 year old home needs (roof and siding next). Thank you Valerie, it is great working with you."

"David and his crew performed the installation of a driveway gate for us. I procured the gate, posts, automatic openers, accessory systems, wiring, etc. ahead of the installation. It took us a while to find a quality contractor that was willing to perform the “labor only” and didn’t force us to purchase the gate materials as part of a package. We appreciated David’s willingness to take on this type of working arrangement. We consulted with David along the way right up to the installation date. He was courteous responsive with his guidance. Overall, we found the timeliness of work and pricing to be very reasonable. We had a some subtle changes to the work scope along the way; however, David was able to maintain his original estimate. We needed to trench about 300’ of wire from the house to the road. David and his crew were willing to pick-up, use, and return our rental equipment for us – we appreciated this. In the spirit of full disclosure, here are the reasons I’m unable to give an “A” rating. (1) The cut in the driveway is not parallel to the gate … so it’s a slightly diagonal cut. Recommend snapping a chalk line, etc. Measure 2x, cut 1x. (2) Burial of the 300’ of wire was done somewhat quickly and the wire was a little taught … I’ve had to take time to re-bury several sections, (3) Misalignment of holes drilled into the gate posts (off by 3” … this is a lot) … this was done in haste by a crew member, not David. I did have to plug/paint the area for aesthetics and rust avoidance. The posts are 100 pound, 4”x4” steel which I had procured separately … more care needs to be taken with the accuracy of measurements."

"Due to weather the job was started slightly after the original date and we had interruptions that were weather related. The weather is always a factor on an outside job and flexibility needs to be understood. Steve and anyone we have ever dealt with through his company have been extremely polite and accommodating. We have actually hired Nexgen for more jobs since the original and would do so again. The quality is outstanding and Steve's knowledge and willingness to work with us and help us with our vision was something no one else could do. This is not a cookie-cutter operation. Steve listened and offered options which included ideas we were not even aware of. Great contractor to do business with.

Gate Repair questions, answered by experts

No, you can’t use a garage door opener as a gate opener. Automatic garage door openers and automatic gate openers serve similar functions and may even operate similarly via remote control; however, they aren’t interchangeable. Garage door openers aren’t intended for outdoor use and can’t withstand exposure to the elements.

To make your gate safe, purchase a gate made from strong material such as wrought iron, stainless steel, or other metals. Ensure that the gate has strong joints and bars that are welded on rather than inserted loosely. If you’re concerned about people climbing over your gate, you can deter them by installing fence spikes along the top as an extra precaution.

While it is possible to install a manual gate yourself, it is generally not recommended. Professional installation is strongly advised, especially for automated or large driveway gates. Gates can be extremely heavy, sometimes weighing hundreds of pounds, which makes them bulky and dangerous to maneuver into place. Proper installation requires perfect positioning and balancing to ensure the gate swings smoothly and functions as intended. For automated gates, the wiring is also hazardous and typically requires a licensed electrician. Mistakes during a DIY installation can be costly, as materials alone can average around $1,000. Given the safety risks and the difficulty of achieving a proper setup, it is best to hire a professional gate installer.

Thieves can open almost anything with enough time and the right tools, but they also prefer easy targets that are unlikely to get them caught. Forcing open gates is loud and difficult, and to be able to open one electronically requires extensive knowledge of the system, which most thieves don't have. Electric and other security gates are great deterrents because the thief will move to an easier target. If the thief is determined to enter your property, they will most likely find a different entrance point.

In most cases, you will need a permit to install a new driveway or property gate. An exception might be if you are simply replacing an existing gate. Before issuing a permit, your local municipality may require a site plan or survey to verify property lines and prevent encroachment on a neighbor's property. Permits for a gate typically cost under $100. Be aware that corner properties may have additional restrictions on gate height or style. It's wise to confirm permit requirements with your local building department or your gate installation company, which can usually handle the entire permitting process for you.
