Bob Bedford founded Bedford Builders in 2003, after earning a degree in building construction and cabinet making from New England Institute of Technology and working with some of the greatest contractors and trades people in the region. While primarily focused on renovating one and two-family dwellings, Bob is experienced with historic renovation, commercial fit-outs and custom fabrication. Clients are continually impressed with his detailed and accurate written estimates, high levels of communication throughout the process, and building trade knowledge, as well as his personal involvement on every job. In 2014, the company changed its name to Bedford Builders Remodeling, LLC. Bob has trained with the RI State Building Code Commissioner and has passed the required testing and granted the certification to become a building inspector on 1 & 2 Family Dwellings as well as the State Building Code (Commercial). He takes seriously the responsibility to comply with current building codes and standards, no matter what the project. Quality work, professionalism and an eye for detail remain the hallmarks of every Bedford Builders Remodeling job. Acting as general contractor for each project, the Bedford Builders Remodeling team manages the entire project from start to finish, including architect interaction, estimating, coordinating skilled specialty subcontractors, arranging for permits and inspections, scheduling, and on-site supervision to ensure the work is being done properly and to your satisfaction. Rick grew up in a family of hard working contractors, and has been learning the skills of the trade since a very young age. He brings to the table a high level of expertise that is often hard to come by, and will always take the time to get the job done right.

"Rick was very responsive at first and eager to get started on my bathroom remodel job for one of my apartments. He is commended for having to respond to quote request fast. I decided to give him a chance to do a good job before handing a bigger jobs for my other properties. Before the work started, I emphasized that the dust control and cleanup was very, very important to me. The job involved lots of demolition work inside the apartment - naturally, there will be lots of dust. The apartment is currently occupied and has lots of furniture, computers and audio equipment that I wanted to protect. I thought he and his workers were communicated this request. I even offered the use of dust control fan and Zip Wall to isolate the work area but he said he will be fine without them. Once the job started, I was away for one week to take care of my family. When I returned, I discovered that the door to the adjacent room was left open. That is my office with all the equipment and important papers. They left their construction material and equipment in this room. I was horrified that there are fine dust everywhere - on my printer, computer peripherals, furniture. I brought this issue up with Rick. Nothing happened. The worst part was that the job was declared done and I paid the service in full - They never returned to clean up and pickup the equipment. After almost a whole month, the supply and equipment is still there. I had to spend extra time cleaning up after their mess. Very unprofessional. Lessons learned. Do not pay the balance until all the cleaning is done and all the equipment removed. I expect the clean up and dust control to be a part of the job. I also repeatedly asked or professionally prepared invoices with vendor name and address, job details and the most important of all, the invoice number - all of these essential information is important to keep track of expenses for my projects. The SMS texts message and e-mail messages were not appropriate for this purpose. I explained to Rick that my CPA requires them many times. I even sent him a sample invoice and quote in Microsoft Word template - he never understood what I was asking. He is a nice guy, but not a good project manager or competent business person. The work was done, however, the work quality is fair to good - I had to go back and correct some sloppy work. Lacking attention to details and follow up bothered me. The biggest issues is the lack of clean up and keeping the worksite cleans so he and his crew gets an F. I do not think I will be hiring his company in my future projects."

"He hired Tom Harrop to install kitchen cabinets and a heater under the kitchen sink, vinal flooring, plastering in a small area, add ceiling lighting and a shiplap ceiling. Once the work was done I asked Tom to do a walk through and he refused saying he stood behind his empoyees work. Here are the PROs and CONs. PROs: 1.) work was completed in a timely fashion 2) they did a beautiful job on the shiplap ceiling and lighting. CONs: 1) The brand new white cabinets had some nicks requiring paint touch up. 2) Terrible job on the floors! Uneven spots, lengths are uneven at the edges, gaps showing, no finish work. Terrible job!! 3) plastering looks like it wasn't even done! And there is some peeling of paint on the plaster job. Terrible job!!! 4) we were promised and paid for an under the kitchen sink heater which we never received. Called multiple times with no response. Lesson learned, will never use Tom Harrop again!!"

"Very happy with the basement. Work actually started 2-3 weeks earlier than expected. We were told the job would last about 4-5 weeks. Basement work was completed in about 4 weeks. Very professional. No worries about whether the plumber or electrician would be available. We discussed small changes to the layout (e.g., where the sink in the bathroom would be located) and everyone was very accommodating."

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

You attach solid surface counters with construction adhesive. Once your slab is ready, you fit it to the wall, apply the adhesive, and secure it in place with clamps until the glue dries. This usually takes several days.

Afterward, you install the backsplash, faucets, and more. At this point, you can caulk the counter, allow it to dry for 24 hours, and then you're done with the installation.

The best way to protect your quartz countertops is to keep them clean. Promptly wipe any spills and clean with a damp cloth and dish soap as needed. Doing a deeper clean weekly is also recommended. To do this, move small appliances and fruit bowls out of the way and wash the entire surface with a squirt of dish soap on a damp cloth.

You cannot permanently seal a butcher block countertop. No matter what material you use as a sealant, all finishes wear over time and eventually require refinishing. However, some materials are longer-lasting. For example, mineral oils only last about one month. Stains or sealants like polyurethane can last several years with proper care.

Yes, a 12-inch countertop overhang will need support to keep it stable. The exact type of support depends on your countertop thickness and material. Thicker, heavier countertops need extra support, like a corbel or a post, to keep them from sagging or toppling over.

The cost to install countertops is $3,105 on average. This project cost can range from $400 to $8,500, depending on the material, edging, and countertop size.

Laminate countertops are generally the most cost-efficient, ranging from $8 to $27 per square foot. On the other hand, slate countertops are considered more luxurious and range from $30 to $90 per square foot. There are also countertop materials priced between those two, including stainless steel, granite, Corian, and wood.
