"Paul was excellent to work with. We had to make many changes during our remodel. He was very accommodating and easy to work with. Our ADA remodel to convert a bedroom and bathroom making it wheelchair accessible turned out beautifully! We are very happy and would highly recommend His company ."

"I originally hired Wally to replace two support beams that span a bilco opening on my 200+ year old stone house. The job was very delicate because temporary supports had to be installed before the original log beams could be removed. I had visions of my entire 3-story stone wall collapsing, but once I saw how meticulously his crew worked and the incredible results I knew that it had been done right. Once I realized Wally’s ability, I quickly hired him to do other repairs which included: -Replacing a beam in the basement -Thorosealing the stone foundation wall in the basement -Replacing two concrete pads on my sidewalk that were cracked -Fixing a 3’x3’ sink hole in my driveway -Pour a concrete pad for my Generac generator to sit on -Filling in an old vent hole and landscaping to ensure that the ground next to the house slopes away from the house When it comes to your home, there is little that Wally and his team can’t do. I give Manfredia's Carpentry my highest recommendation."

"It was a wonderful experience. Matt knew what he was doing. He listened to what we wanted and made sure we got what we wanted. He had suggested we visit a Cabinet maker store in Lancaster and after doing that we found the perfect cabinets for us. His work is excellent. He is very efficient and neat. Even with our changes he was able to maintain and keep the project on schedule. On a personal level he and his helper were very nice. I would highly recommend Matt to anyone and we are having him come back to do other projects."

Basement Remodel FAQs, answered by experts

Any bowing in a basement wall indicates a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional. If your basement wall bows more than 1 inch, it's time for an inspection. Generally, a wall can bow up to 30% of its thickness (around 2.5 inches for an 8-inch-thick wall) before it becomes an urgent situation. Bowing of 2 to 4 inches is more straightforward to fix than bowing of more than 4 inches, which will require significant repairs. If the bowing is more than 6 inches, the wall will likely need to be replaced. The sooner you address the problem, the easier and less expensive the repair will be.

Yes, in most cases, finishing a basement is worth the cost. The project adds valuable, usable square footage to your home and typically provides a return on investment (ROI) of 70% to 75%. For example, an average basement refinishing project costing $32,000 could add between $22,400 and $24,000 to your property's value. The final value added depends on factors like your location, the quality of materials and workmanship, and the features you include, such as a living space, bedroom, or bathroom. To be officially counted in your home's total square footage, the finished space must comply with all local building codes, including requirements for points of egress. However, in areas prone to flooding, a finished basement might be seen as a liability by potential buyers and could potentially decrease your home's value.

A finished basement does not always count as square footage, as this varies by state regulations. In areas that allow below-grade spaces to be included in a home's official square footage, the basement must typically meet certain conditions. These conditions often include having a functional egress and being a livable space with flooring, finished walls, and temperature control. To be certain, contact your local assessor to confirm your area's specific policies regarding basement square footage.

A walkout basement is considered to be partially below grade because at least one wall is entirely exposed. In some cases and in specific municipalities, inspectors and appraisers will still count walkout basements as below grade, which means the space can’t serve as living space or be rented out. If you intend on using the area as living space or a separate apartment, you should check with your local building department to make sure it’s legal to do so.

Yes, you can install a summer kitchen or kitchenette in your basement. They serve similar purposes as outdoor kitchens, keeping the main floor of the house cool and providing another space to cook and congregate. Basement kitchens are also a worthwhile alternative for homeowners without much space in the backyard. They come with a few logistical questions to sort out, though, like ventilation and waterproofing.
