"I can't say enough about the work Wright did for us. We had a mold issue that required replacement of a large section of subfloor, drywall, trim work, and tile removal and installation. They even picked up a large kitchen cabinet for us and reinstalled it when the carpenter who rebuilt it was concerned about installing it due to the coronavirus. They were always very responsive, professional and extremely courteous, even checking in with us every day to see how the work went that day. I've never been more satisfied with a contractor, and would not even call another company if I needed this type of work done again."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

While adding insulation can be beneficial, there is too much of a good thing. Too much insulation can seal your house to the point where it can't release moisture that enters it—essentially trapping water vapor inside. Warm, humid climates are extra susceptible to mold from moisture issues, but homes in colder climates can experience condensation from an air-tight home when freezing temperatures thaw.

The most affordable way to insulate behind unfinished walls is to install fiberglass batts or rolls. These total around $0.75 per linear foot, with the width matching the gaps between standard studs perfectly. However, it’s important to consider the R-value of your insulation and the climate in your area, as fiberglass insulation isn’t the best in terms of preventing heat transfer. Plus, the most affordable option may cost more on electricity bills over time. The most affordable way to insulate behind finished walls is to leave them up and use blown-in insulation to avoid drywall replacement.

Yes, the air in your home needs some release; otherwise, moisture can get trapped inside the layers of insulation and potentially lead to mold and mildew. An insulation contractor near you should be able to determine the precise amount of insulation that will seal your home, keep you comfortable, and not lead to any mold.

A vapor barrier keeps moisture out of the crawl space, while insulation reduces the amount of unconditioned air—and sometimes moisture—that enters the space. Coupling a vapor barrier with insulation can help prevent humidity and related moisture damage in a crawl space while also making your home more energy-efficient. Just be sure to use insulation that won’t get damaged from moisture, like rigid foam board or expanding spray foam insulation.

While there are many different kinds of insulation, spray foam, blown-in, foam board, and batt and roll are the four types you’re most likely to see. That doesn’t mean they’re alike, though. Each one varies drastically in terms of cost, materials used, and how they’re installed—not to mention, how well they limit heat transfer.
