"The repairman communicated with me about arrival time and was punctual. He completed most of the jobs on my list. He was unable to complete the soffit replacement, he indicated that type of work required a general contractor. All in all, I was satisfied."

"My husband and I were getting ready for a kitchen/bath remodel with a tentative start schedule of mid-late Sept.  We wanted to remove some wallpaper in the kitchen/dining area prior to the start of the remodel. In that process we discovered damaged drywall beneath the wallpaper, suspecting the previous h/o may have used the wallpaper to cover up a problem. That sent us into a panic mode knowing that any day we might have new cabinets and flooring on the way (and surely wanted to fix the drywall before the brand new goods were installed).
Nate call me back ( On Labor Day weekend!) to see how he could help. After giving him dimensions and describing the project he gave me a quote on the phone and confirmed he would squeeze our repair job in over the next few weeks so it could be done before the remodel started. I was greatly relieved, and delighted that even though our location was just beyond his service area he agreed to come to our rescue.
A week later the kitchen & bath contractor called to say they would start the following Monday. Once they arrived I showed them our drywall dilemma. They explained that it would work best for them to do our drywall repairs as they already planned to remove and replace some other wall areas to re-route plumbing, electrical, etc as part of the remodel.
So I had to call Nate back and explain that the remodel started earlier than expected and we would not need his help. He was quite gracious and happy that our remodel would proceed without delay.
I thanked Nate again and again for calling me back right away and agreeing to help us. I was impressed with his quick response and kind offer to find a way to work us into his current schedule to save our upcoming project! Nate is a true professional!
We have an older home and have other projects in mind. Nate will be the first guy we call when we need drywall help!

"Went wonderful with the contractor. They were great to work with and helped us navigate a very troublesome insurance company. They drove from northern Virginia to silver spring to do the work as well, not any easy task and a long commute in traffic. They were just great."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Balcony construction or replacement typically requires a building permit from your local permitting authority. Safety and building integrity are the main reasons for the need to obtain a permit and the subsequent inspections. In some cases, especially cantilevered balconies, your municipality may also require the oversight and signature of a structural engineer.

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.
