Most of the time, a squeaky door is the result of dry hinges, where metal parts rub together without enough lubrication. Dirt, debris, moisture damage, and damaged rollers can all make a sliding door difficult to open and close. Keeping the door tracks clear of any loose material and making sure rollers are clean and well lubricated can help keep your door opening and closing smoothly. Clean out the tracks and rollers and use a silicone-based lubricant once a month to ensure your door is working properly.

The vast majority of hinges are symmetrical, and either side of the hinge can go on the door or the frame. Occasionally, you'll find a hinge specifically made for right or left-handed doors with different attachment hardware or larger plates on one side. In most cases, the large side of the hinge goes on the frame.

It is possible to install hinges backward, so be careful when placing them. Position the hinge so that the hinge pin faces the direction the door will swing. For example, if you're standing on the side the door will open into, the pin should be visible. Be extra careful when installing exterior doors, as placing the hinges on the outside for an outward-facing door makes your home much easier to break into.

Many doors can be cut to size, but it depends on the door material. Solid wood doors are relatively easy to trim to a specific size, while hollow core and metal doors are trickier and can usually only be shaved down a little before you risk damaging them. If your door needs a lot of adjustment, it's best to order a custom size or have a pro do the resizing to make sure it holds up over time.

The job is relatively simple, but it does require some skill. When planing a door, you run the risk of splintering it if you don't do it correctly. You’ll need to remove the door from the hinges in order to properly plane it, and removing and rehanging a door can be a two-person job.
