"The roofing specialists of J. Parker Construction did a terrific job installing the flashing on my roof. They were professional and a pleasure to work with. James Parker evaluated the area of the water leak in my laundry area and traced the problem to my roof flashing. He and his crew were throughly professional and an absolute pleasure to work with. I recommend and will be sure to call James in the future when I have a suitable project."

"I needed a new roof to satisfy the Insurance company (my existing roof was 28 years old). Called Home Run Roofing at 5pm on Monday, scheduled the rep for the next morning. Thorough inspection of all roofing components, discussed price, color etc. They happened to have a cancellation on Friday (today). The work crew arrived and quickly dispatched the old roof, had the barriers in place, ridge vent installed shingles placed and total cleanup of the site by just after 2pm. Amazing! This was a great experience with Home Run roofing from start to finish. I will be working with them again to replace my windows for sure! The roof is beautiful!"

Customers say: True professional

"The Main Roof and Porch roof job went very well, JZM explained what they were going to do, what it would cost, and dates we both agreed on. When the job was completed they cleaned up, and left me pictures of my old roof and my new roof. They did an outstanding job. I would hire them again, and recommend them to other friends and my neighbors. Thank you JZM Roofing."

"I initially hired New Vision Construction Group to repair my second floor roof however, Henry determined that I would need a new roof altogether based upon the various problems he detected while looking at it. I'm extremely pleased with the new roof installed by New Vision Construction Group and would not hesitate to recommend this company to anyone in need of professional workmanship at a reasonable cost. I will definitely hire this company again."

"The company, LLC Cover All Exteriors, were on time, did a great job on the roof as well as the torch down on my porch roof. The debris was cleaned and removed. There was a small problem with the torch down porch roof twice, which can happen when dealing with water. However, with no questions asked the company sent the crew out immediately and effectively reconciled both issues. I am now using that same company to install windows. I highly recommend LLC Cover All Exteriors. Jonece"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

No, you should not close or cover your gable vents in the winter. While it might seem logical to block cold air, heating your home creates hot air that rises and can cause condensation in the attic. If the vents are covered, this moisture becomes trapped, creating an ideal environment for mold and mildew. Keeping the gable vents open ensures proper ventilation, which helps dry out the attic, maintain even temperatures, and prevent moisture-related damage.

The terms “roof shingles” and “roof tiles” are sometimes used interchangeably, but the term “shingles” most often refers to asphalt, rubber, metal, or slate shingles, and the term “tiles” normally means they’re made from clay or concrete. In all cases, shingles are small, rectangular components that a roofer layers in an overlapping pattern to protect the structure underneath from the elements.

The number of roof vents necessary for a 2,000-square-foot house depends on several factors. The calculation depends on the net free area within the attic and whether your municipality requires a 1/150 or a 1/300 ratio of venting square feet to attic square feet. If you install vents with a square-foot opening of one, you'll need either 14 or seven exhaust vents and an equal square-foot amount of intake vents.

While two-layer torch down roofs are easier to install than three-layer roofing, it is best not to DIY the installation. Torch down roofs require expert knowledge of the application process to get it right the first time and prevent leaks or poor craftsmanship, not to mention that roof work can be dangerous.

You can use silicone caulk around the upper lip of your roof vent boot to seal it temporarily, or you can slide a repair sleeve over the roof vent and old vent boot to stop air and water leaks temporarily. However, these aren’t permanent solutions, so you should always hire a professional to come out and replace the roof vent boot for a long-lasting fix and peace of mind.
