Packs Precision Patch is a one man drywall repair business that is licensed and insured. I can do it all when it comes to drywall however I specialize in patching holes that other trades make when doing their work such as plumbers and electricians. I also level 5 old plaster walls so they look smooth and crisp as well as repair cracks. I do this work on the side after my job so I am available evenings after 5ish on week days and all day on friday and sunday.

If you still cannot tell, peek under an outlet cover and check the cut edges. The rough edges show the composition of the wall. You will see either drywall (two paper sheets sandwiching gypsum material) or only plaster material (no paper sheets).

You may need to replace drywall because of smoke damage. If the drywall is covered in soot, you may be able to clean it, but it will require a lot of time and effort. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum. It is primarily used for large-scale projects, such as taping and finishing the seams on newly installed drywall. It tends to shrink more than spackle and can be more difficult to spread.

While both products can be used to fill small depressions and cracks, spackle cannot replace joint compound for taping and mudding new drywall. Conversely, you can often use joint compound for small patching jobs typically done with spackle.
