Small jobs welcome

"We were in the middle of a tile install, and needed some quick drywall repairs completed before our project could continue. Rafael was able to fit us into his schedule, and did a fantastic job on very short notice."

Customers say: Quality work

"I'm very happy with the quality of the work and the value, given I got three other quotes for finishing my basement before selecting Dan. He and his guys are very friendly and easy-going. He kept to his word on the price and was very accommodating of small changes as the project progressed. My only negative comments surround communication and timeliness. There were numerous days I expected Dan and his crew to come that they didn't show up. They also never came to the house before 10:30 AM and were usually gone for the day by 2:00 so the job dragged on far longer than we originally agreed it would. That said, I know it was a small basement job and there were days they couldn't do more until something dried. Bottom line, despite the delays and poor communication at times, I think Dan is honest, hard-working, and does a good job for the money so I would hire him again."

"I hired R&E to install cabinets, a kitchen island and transoms. They came in and did a beautiful job. They were respectful and communication was excellent. The price was fair. I would recommend Rooster & Eagle for your home improvement needs."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Drywall is safe to cut as long as you follow proper procedures, such as wearing personal protective equipment and using the right tools to score and cut the drywall. When cutting new drywall, it can release dust with silica and other compounds that could pose health risks. Leave cutting drywall to the pros, or wear a high-quality respiratory mask, goggles, and other PPE when handling drywall.

How you hang the drywall can affect the finishing process. It's often easier to finish horizontal drywall panels, as the seams run across the wall rather than up and down. Standard drywall panels are 48 inches wide, so the seam is easy to reach without bending down or stretching your arms.

A utility knife is sharp enough to score the drywall and it may work in a pinch for outlet box holes. However, one of the best tools for drywall when you need to make exact cuts for an outlet box quickly is a drywall saw. This handheld tool has a longer blade than a utility knife, so it penetrates the thickness of the drywall easily. The design of its handle and the teeth in its blade make it easier to control while cutting quicker than you can with a utility knife.

Whether you apply the drywall mesh before or after drywall mud depends on the type of patch it is. For self-adhesive patches, you’ll put the patch down first and then coat it with mud. Mesh patches that are not self-adhesive will require you to put mud down first and then press the mesh into it, followed by additional coats of mud.

Although they are used for similar tasks, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum and is primarily used for large-scale projects like taping and finishing seams on new drywall. Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it a thicker compound best suited for small wall repairs like filling nail holes or cracks, as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. For small repairs, either product can be suitable. However, you can use joint compound for small jobs in place of spackle, but you cannot use spackle for large-scale taping and mudding projects.
