Customers say: Quick response

"John's people were on time for the project. They were courteous and careful of our property. Their workmanship was superb in the plaster repair and painting of our sunroom ceiling and walls. They cleaned up each day and at end of project, room was spotless and ready to move furniture back in."

"I donâ t often write reviews except for exceptional service! I found Brothers on Angieâ s List and decided to call. First, they responded quickly and Jacob, their estimator was out soon after. He didnâ t try to upsell me. We discussed my top roof gutter that looked like a good heavy snow would bring it down and my front porch gutter whose only purpose seemed to be for watering the plant I stuck under its leak. The weather held up the team, but I appreciated the emails and phone calls to update my status. When the crew came out, they were friendly, polite, efficient craftsmen who fixed the existing gutter (they could have told me it needed to be replaced) and installed the new one. They were done and cleaned up quickly! I recommend them highly! Price and service - Commendable. Added plus, Jacob is a dog wrangler. As I was signing the contract my lab-mix escaped out the front door. Jacob helped corral my troublemaker as I followed in the car. Jacob saved me from a heart-attack and heart break. Thank you again Jacob!"

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

Carpet tiles are less expensive than traditional carpet. The average cost of carpet installation is $1,800, or $3 to $11 per square foot. In comparison, carpet tiles cost $2.50 to $11 apiece and can often be bought in bulk cartons. Since you can more easily DIY carpet tiles, you may be able to save on installation costs, too.

As with anything you buy, be wary of prices that seem too good to be true. Some low-cost flooring products can contain chemicals that release harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in the form of fumes that can be inhaled or dust that can cause skin conditions.

Even good-quality products can be dangerous for DIY-ers who don’t take proper precautions. Always carefully read manufacturer instructions and wear the recommended protective gear when working with paints and other chemicals. You can also hire a local garage flooring pro with the experience and equipment needed to perform the installation safely with no lingering fumes or debris.

No, thick carpet padding isn’t necessarily better than thinner padding. The appropriate padding thickness will depend on the type of carpet and the amount of foot traffic in the area.

For example, thick padding works well in low-traffic areas, like bedrooms, where you have soft and plush carpeting. However, thick carpet padding can damage low-pile carpet, which is used in the busiest parts of your home (like hallways and entryways). For that reason, it’s best to use thinner, heavier padding underneath carpet in high-traffic areas.

Moso bamboo, Phyllostachys edulis, is the most commonly used species for bamboo flooring. Moso bamboo is native to China and Taiwan, and it was later introduced to Japan and then the United States. In addition to flooring, Moso bamboo is used in textile production, and the shoots are edible. Moso is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world, which is why it’s an affordable and sustainable option compared to traditional hardwood.

There are a few cleaning products that you should never use on carpets because you may accidentally ruin them. Do not use bleach, dish soap, laundry detergent, and abrasive cleaners on carpet. For more guidance on products to avoid, consult a local carpet cleaning company for expert advice.
