"The ramp and mini-deck is very sturdy, and we are happy with it. They worked fast and showed up when they said they would. When they found out via my first review that I needed spindles on the sides to keep my grandchildren from falling in my little pond, they called me and offered to place them at no extra charge. Yay. They know the building codes, they follow through. I would definitely hire them again."

"Out of the Ordinary Construction is a father and son team, they built a deck at the rear of my home after removing some dilapidated steps. They did an outstanding job, I was impressed on their work ethics and dedication to completing the project. They arrived early in the morning and worked until late evening; their professionalism was astonishing and amazing!! My new deck is gorgeous and I am a very happy customer, I will use this company again on a future project and I highly recommend them for anyone needing a project done. Customers say: True professional

"Mike did an excellent job in repairing my 30+ year old deck by removing all deck boards, railings and stair stringers and installed all new PT lumber. In addition, he replaced all joist hangers. I am very pleased with how the deck turned out."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Most Cape Cod houses are two stories tall at the peak, although they’re considered one-and-a-half stories tall because the steep roof pitch cuts off a portion of the living space on the second story. Unless you raise the roof on your Cape Cod house to add a dormer, the interior rooms upstairs will lose some usable living space to the sloped ceilings.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

Traditionally, bungalows are single-story homes, although having a half or partial story on top of the first floor is common. While adding a second story to a bungalow is certainly possible, the home would no longer be considered a bungalow by the strictest definition.

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.
