"Chris's contracting crew was one the best experiences I have had in a long while. Ethan and Grant were awesome. They were very informative and double double check their work to make sure I no longer had any leaks from my toilet into my kitchen ceiling. They cleaned their area and work great together as a team. The painter (sorry I could not remember your name) with the cool earring was also very professional and explained each steps. He took his time and made sure I was satisifed with the job. his swirl are better then the orginials. Thank you so much Chris Contracting. I will be reaching out again for some floor work :) and any maintenance I may need."

"I was having trouble turning the lock and opening my front door, and I also had a couple of other doors that wouldn’t shut properly or needed adjustment. I reached out to Random Remodeling, and Chip returned my call quickly—we were able to schedule an appointment right away. He came out yesterday and was extremely professional and efficient. This was a job I had been putting off for a long time, so I’m very glad it’s finally taken care of. I’ve already scheduled Random Remodeling for another project we’ve been wanting to complete and would strongly recommend them to others!"

"Walter and Glen at Protect Your Home Group with ADT are the best people to talk to in terms of security alarm. Being a locksmith myself I know how important it is to deal with the right people. I referred a lot of customers to them and so far they are happy with their service. I myself got one for my house. Thank you for a consistent service and great deal."

Small jobs welcome

"I am transplant to the Pittsburgh area and did not have the luxury of any family known or referenced contractors and therefore was a little apprehensive about finding a reliable and reputable person. I am also a sort of do it yourselfer when it comes to home improvement projects however, I was in the process of remodeling my bathroom when I hit a road block regarding the reframing of it once I completed the demolition. I searched on HomeAdvisor and was connected with Converge Construction. Jeff, the owner of this company, was very responsive, knowledgeable and just an overall nice guy. The job was completed in a timely manner and to perfection. Jeff also took the time to share recommendations as to how I should complete my project and also offered his assistance if I should hit any challenges along the way. I would highly recommend this company and plan to do more work with them in the future! Keep up the good work! - Harry A."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

While lock crunching as a whole is not terribly common, it is one of the most frequently used means of forced entry into a home. Recent data suggests that forced entry through lock crunching or snapping occurs in more than 25% of burglaries.

If your door handle turns without opening, the most likely culprit is a loose or stripped spindle. This part connects the handles to the latch mechanism, and when it’s not properly engaged, turning the handle does nothing. Other issues might include a broken latch, loose screws, or even something small blocking an inner mechanism. In any case, it’s usually a matter of tightening, adjusting, or replacing a worn-out part inside the handle assembly—or calling in a professional to do it for you.

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

It could be difficult to get in and out of a lock for several reasons, such as the keyhole needing additional lubrication. Particles, debris, and dirt can also get into a lock, making a key stuck (the lubrication can help with the removal).

Newer, electric-powered door locks generally have a life span of five years or less. That’s thanks, in large part, to a phenomenon called planned obsolescence, in which products are programmed to need replacing after a certain amount of time. That’s also why older, manual, push-key locksets can last up to 30 years with regular cleanings and maintenance. When it does come time for a new set-up, know that the cost to change locks ranges from $130 to $500 on average.
