A plumber can get to the bottom of your smelly drain and clean it with specialized jets, hoses, and drain-safe cleaning solutions. It is also smart to call in a plumber if you suspect your drain smell is coming from a stubborn clog or even a leaky pipe.

It might be possible to dissolve hair caught in a drain, but it’s usually not a good way to go about clearing the clog. Some sources mention that baking soda and vinegar can do the trick, but this won’t actually dissolve the hair. The hydrochloric acid in drain cleaners can dissolve the hair over time, but it will much more quickly destroy your plumbing pipes and leave you with bigger issues. The best way to remove hair is to do it manually with a drain snake or to have a plumber use an auger to pull clogs out.

While replacing an outdoor spigot is a fairly straightforward job that often takes less than an hour, it’s not a DIY-friendly task—even if you have basic plumbing experience. Depending on your home’s plumbing setup, you may need to access pipes in your walls or underneath your home. Plus, if you have copper pipes, you might have to solder them. While you may have some water, it's best to wait until after the repair is complete to use your home's pipes. For one thing, the water pressure will most likely be greatly reduced, leading to a less-than-intense shower. There's also the risk of contamination from dirt and bacteria that can enter the broken water main pipe. In many cases, a pro will turn off the flow of water from your water main to do the repairs, so showering won’t likely be an option.
