"Mr Mikaeel immediately contacted me once I put in a request on Home Advisor. He explained his services and he offered me more options than I had received from other engineers. Those options included paying less money which I appreciated right away. He knew I didn't have much time to work with and we scheduled the next day. He arrived on time, was very personable, very professional, explained what I needed to know and also gave me great news. I will recommend him to anyone that needs a structural engineer Thank you Home Advisor!"

"Bruttaniti Architects changed the way I live in my house. My kitchen renovation is among the most spectacular I have ever seen. Anthony walked me through removing a structural wall and offered great advice throughout the project. He gave me so many great ideas about things I didn’t even know I wanted. We trusted his creative talents and the end result is better than anything I imagined. He made working with my contractor very easy and worked seamlessly with the contractor to make my entire renovation experience rewarding. My main floor is now open concept and my kitchen is the true heart of my home."

"My experience with Weaver Architecture and Design was absolutely fantastic. I had an addition as well as some interior changes done and went through a lot of variations. Julie 100% listened, heard and incorporated everything we wanted and needed. When the initial estimate came in higher than we were comfortable with, Julie very thoroughly went through it with us again and very effectively scaled the project down while still giving us everything we needed. She was very patient with us and took the time to help and explain everything making us very confident in the final plans. Julie put so much work into this project. She was always open to our ideas and countless changes we wanted to make. We did not make her job easy but she always was accommodating. For the number of changes we made and the drawings she did, the price was more than fair. She was a pleasure to work with and we are thrilled with how the project came out."

"They were excellent. They quickly made a draft that only needed 3 minor adjustments. The final product was exactly what I needed. They referred me to a structural engineer for review. The whole process took half of the time that they initially estimated. I would definitely use them again."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

A 4-inch-thick concrete slab can support around 4,000 pounds per square foot if a contractor reinforces the slab with rebar, while that same slab without reinforcements will support closer to 1,000 pounds. For the purposes of a patio, 4 inches in thickness without reinforcement should suffice unless you’re installing heavy kitchen equipment or a hot tub on it. In those cases, reinforcing your slab and sticking with 4 inches of thickness should provide plenty of strength.

Yes, water damage can affect your walls' structural integrity. If the water or moisture sits on the walls for an extended period, it can weaken the drywall, plaster, wood framing, and other materials supporting the wall. That's why it's critical to dry out the area as soon as you notice it.

Whether you’re building a new home or building an extension on your existing property, you will likely need both a structural engineer and an architect. A structural engineer will determine what loads your foundation and framing can safely handle, and an architect will draw plans according to those structural calculations to simplify the building process. You can start by contacting a structural engineer near you, as many work alongside architects and can get all of the prep work done at once.

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.
