For many years I was a sub-contractor for a siding installation company. Over the years I began acquiring small jobs from relationships built during that time. I recently decided to venture out on my own and launched Haldeman’s Construction. Free estimates, licensed, insured, Over 17 years experience. Member of these reputable organizations are Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce, Chambersburg Downtown Buy Local, Franklin County Landlord Association. Certifications & Licensing: Pennsylvania Attorney General Licensing, EPA Lead Paint Certification, Mic Starr Insurance.

"They were very professional, cleaned up after their work, and we are very happy with the outcome of the jobs that they did. The team does quality work and we would highly recommend them."

For over 43 years Hagerstown Kitchens has provided the finest all-wood custom cabinets for the market. Our advantage is we are the manufacturer so the client has access to factory direct pricing. We offer Free estimates on all of your cabinetry needs. Hagerstown Kitchens is family owned with a strong emphasis on service.

"The product and customer service here is horrendous. I saw their cabinets in a showroom and wished to support a local business. HUGE mistake. The cabinets I received had joints that didn’t fit together cleanly and the paint covering them was completely uneven and hideous. I spoke with David in their customer service department because I can’t believe they let a product like this off their floor. I was told by him that he wouldn’t talk about my order with me the customer because he doesn’t have a contract with me. I’m hoping my contractor has better luck but anyone that won’t communicate about their product with a consumer and ultimately dismisses them is not someone I would recommend."

Closets questions, answered by experts

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.

You can design your own closet, but it’s usually better to hire a professional to do the work for you. Not only will you get years of design experience to guide you toward the right layout and material choices, but you’ll also only pay slightly more hiring a professional than you would creating your own plans and hiring a carpenter. A high-quality closet designer can provide insight into how to lay out your closet, and they may be able to find you a good deal on the carpentry or complete the work using an affordable, in-house team.

You should primarily pack books upright in boxes. But if you are trying to squeeze books into every last space of the box, you can pack sturdy paperback books with their spines down in the box. You can pack large books flat, as they take up more space anyway.

The vertical space between closet shelves depends on what you're storing. For clothing like shirts and sweaters, 10 to 12 inches is enough. Towels and linens need 12 to 15 inches, while tall storage bins may require 18 inches or more. Overcrowding your shelves can reduce accessibility and increase clutter, so be sure to leave breathing room for your items.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.
