Asbestos Removal questions, answered by experts

The EPA broadly defines hazardous waste as any waste that could pose a danger to humans or the environment. More specifically, it includes any material that could combust or explode under normal temperatures and pressure, as well as materials that are toxic or corrosive. Most buyers would have reservations about purchasing a home with asbestos, so they may offer less for the home. If you hire a pro to completely remove the asbestos, you do not have to disclose to buyers that the home once had asbestos.

When asbestos damages the lungs it causes a condition called “asbestosis” which, unfortunately, can’t be cured once it’s damaged the lungs. This condition is chronic and any treatment is undertaken to improve quality of life. This usually involves quitting smoking, being prescribed oxygen, and undergoing lung rehab. Severe cases usually require a lung transplant.

In most cases, homeowners insurance doesn't cover asbestos abatement. Insurance policies frequently exclude coverage for pollutants, contaminants, and hazardous materials, which include asbestos. It's considered a pre-existing condition in homes built before its ban, so removal is seen as a maintenance expense rather than an insurable loss. There may be an exception if the asbestos-containing materials are disturbed due to a covered event, such as fire or storm damage. Some policies may cover the abatement as a part of those repairs.
