"I can not say enough good things about Mike and his helper. He is very professional and does an excellent job. He communicates very well and keeps you informed of exactly what is happening and when he will arrive. He not only did the power washing of the deck, house and sidewalk, but also fixed the patio that was sinking in several areas. He saw that the piping under the patio was cut and replaced it. "Johnston General Contracting did very fine work on power washing and sealing my deck. The deck looks great. While he was late on the first day of the job the second day he was right on time. I would recommend this company. The only negative would be that the price seemed on the expensive side."

"Bill Staniscia was responsive, professional, and performed quality work. He had to remove bushes and a cracked sidewalk. He is studded out the frame for the larger sidewalk to the house. He laid stone for the foundation and his son tamped it. Then they poured the cement. I love it!!. It is beautiful and makes the curb appeal better. Thank you, Bill!"

"They were great. Very communicative on arrival time, with quotes, with invoicing, and did all services exactly as they said they would and as good as we hoped. They were conscientious in their work, not finishing until it was exactly right...in fact they came back again to touch up some of the deck knowing they needed a certain spot to dry longer. This space allows water and moisture to flow through instead of pooling against the side of your house. The best way to sand a deck is by cleaning it, sanding the boards and stairs with 60- or 80-grit sandpaper, and sanding the railings and posts with 80-grit sandpaper. You should sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damaging the timber. When sanding your deck, use medium pressure and aim for an even sand. Pressing too hard with a sander can damage decks, as most are softwoods.

What goes under your floating deck depends on your preferences. Some homeowners put landscaping fabric underneath their decks to prevent weeds from popping up through the boards. Others choose to build a floating deck over grass or gravel. However, it’s best not to set your deck directly on the ground. Instead, set your deck on blocks to keep it elevated enough to prevent moisture from rotting the wood.

Pressure-treated decking may be worth it if you want a natural, insect- and rot-resistant decking material that will last for decades with proper maintenance. As such, it’s a much better option than untreated pine. Alternative wood decking materials like cedar and redwood tend to be less durable and more expensive. Some homeowners prefer composite decking, which is a low-maintenance alternative to wood but is also more costly.

Building a deck isn't too hard if you’re handy with carpentry, have the necessary tools, and are willing to put effort into it. However, other factors, such as plans, permits, and design, can be hard if you don’t have experience in those areas.
