Yes, wood rot spreads and causes damage due to fungi. All forms of wet rot caused by fungi spread throughout the frame and door, but they’ll stop when encountering non-wood materials. Dry rot, on the other hand, spreads throughout the area to wood with porous openings to accept the spores.

Most homeowners insurance policies won’t pay for the removal of dead, rotting trees. That’s because insurance is intended to protect you from sudden, unexpected accidents. So if a tree is sick, dying, neglected, or rotten but is still standing and hasn’t caused any property damage, it’s unlikely your insurance will cover the cost to have it removed. 

How long it takes wood to rot can range from as little as a few weeks in poor conditions to as long as 40 years if properly maintained. Protecting pressure-treated wood against moisture is the best way to prevent rot—wood exposed to water for extended periods of time is more prone to rot. Wood used outdoors on decks and porches is more likely to rot due to the elements, so re-seal pressure-treated wood every two to three years to maximize protection.

You can stop wood rot in its early stages by fixing the moisture problem that led to it, treating the wood with a fungicide, filling weak spots with an epoxy wood filler, and sealing the wood against future moisture. Depending on the extent of the damage, already rotted wood may need to be replaced if it’s no longer structurally sound.

There are a handful of things you can look for to determine if you need to pay for gutter repairs, including the following:

  • Water leaking from the underside of your gutters during rainfall

  • Visible gaps between your gutters and your roof

  • Frequent issues with gutters overflowing or holding standing water

  • Gutters that sag or pull away from the house

  • Water damage to soffits, fascia boards, or other building materials

  • Mold growth on your exterior walls

  • Soil erosion underneath your roof overhang

  • Foundation leaks or inward bowing of foundation walls
