"Wow! I was amazed when the fella arrived in short and t-shirt during the day when these vicious bugs are more active, but with no fear he went at lifting the top of the grill while holding onto the sprayer. The hornets went wild. But Kill Em Dead got them taken care of, thank you, now I can use my deck."

"I began hearing a scratching sound that was coming from a wall in my living room. The sound appeared to come from inside the wall, or right at the base of the wall, near the floor boards. The sound persisted through the day intermittently and then later I heard what sounded like crying or screeching. At that point, I called Archer (after locating them through Angie's List) and spoke with Keith Jones. He said a technician would be out to take a look at my problem that afternoon or the next morning. I also received a call from the technician an hour or so later to set up an appt for me (the next morning). He arrived on time and discussed what I observed the day before. There were no sounds at the time of the technician's visit. He took a look outside and wasn't quite sure what was causing the sounds/noises. He said he would discuss my situation with Keith, as he has more experience with rodent pests that might enter a wall space. I heard from Keith a couple hours later and he stopped by shortly after. I had recorded the sounds the pest was making the day before and played it for Keith. He knew right away that it was a squirrel making the noises. Keith spent an hour or so in my home, investigating how the squirrel would have entered the home. He took a look in the attic, the basement, and outside of the home. He also was able to hear the squirrel run inside the wall and scratching. Through some investigation, it was determined that the squirrel was entering the wall through a fireplace/chimney area outside of the home. (The fireplace has since been sealed off and drywalled over---sometime before I moved in to the home.) Keith opened the venting to the chimney and advised us to leave it open to allow the squirrel to exit. He knew the squirrel was in this space bc there was fur and the squirrel screeched as he reached a stick into the space. Keith left, asking me to let him know if the sound returned in a few days. After a few days, my husband and I heard no more noises, and decided to close the vent back up. Shortly after that, we heard the noises again. I called Keith back and asked what we needed to do now. He advised us to open the vent back up, place crumpled newspapers in the space, and to call back in a couple days, keeping an eye on the paper. If the paper was disturbed or removed, then the squirrel would be considered still scuttling in and out. He did tell us that if the sqirrel was still hanging out, we could discuss our options for trapping and removal. Finally, after all of these trials and phone conversations, the paper was not disturbed and the squirrel has not returned.

Every interaction I had with Keith was pleasant and helpful. He was thorough and clear in explaining what needed done. I would certainly call Archer again for any pest control issues I have, and would recommend them without hesitation.

Bird Control questions, answered by experts

No, mothballs do not keep bats away. Not only are mothballs completely ineffective when repelling or removing bats, but using them could be illegal, depending on where you live. Remember, bats are federally protected, and it's illegal to use chemicals during the removal process, and mothballs tend to fall into this category.

Some birds of prey, like owls, hunt at night. Hawks are diurnal and need good light to see their prey. You could see them circling anytime from dawn to dusk. Species like the common red-tailed hawk are most active in the early morning and late evening when their prey is also typically on the go.

Pest control measures for bird and bat issues typically last from several weeks to months, depending on the effectiveness of the implemented solutions and the return of conducive conditions.

This depends on if their needs are being met. They'll likely return night after night if they have access to food, water, and adequate shelter. If this changes, they’ll look for another roosting spot. This is why bright lights and other dissuading factors often work when removing bats from a property.

Certain strong smells may help repel bats, though this is not a foolproof method and is best used in conjunction with other deterrence strategies. Scents like peppermint oil, eucalyptus, cinnamon, cloves, and mint are often suggested as natural remedies. To create a spray, you can mix two cups of warm water with half a cup of sugar and a few drops of your preferred essential oil. Apply this mixture using a spray bottle to possible entry points and throughout the affected area, such as an attic. While this home remedy is popular, evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited.
