"Our living room used to feel busy and mismatched. Ellen helped us turn this room into a cozy, eclectic space that finally feels like us. She guided us in choosing colors, art, and furniture that reflect our personality — and everything functions beautifully now. The TV is no longer the focus, and the room feels calm and creative. We were so pleased we are hiring her to design a new bathroom for us. So excited to work with her again."

"We think that it would be impossible to find painters who are more skillful, more dedicated to the customer's satisfaction, and easier to work with than the Ultimate Custom Painting team (Rick, Dan, Erik, and Rome). This was the third time that we have hired UCP to do interior work; and we did so because we had such positive experiences the first two times.  Once again we were thrilled with the outcome.  Our house was built in 1928 with large baseboards and window trim, crown mouldings, lots of nooks and crannies, and (lovely but hard to paint) textured plaster.  It is not, in other words, an easy house to paint.  On top of that, the areas that UCP painted on this visit hadn't been painted in at least 12 years; there were settlement cracks in the plaster, areas of peeling paint, and lots of prep work required.  And prep work, in our view, is what identifies the real professionals.  UCP patched plaster, scraped numerous areas where peeling had begun, sanded, primed, repatched, resanded and reprimed as needed.  For every hour that they painted they must have spent 4-5 hours in prep work.  And did I mention that they did this, to accommodate our crazy schedule, working full days from Friday through Monday (i.e., including Saturday and Sunday) on two successive weekends, arriving promptly first thing in the morning.  Indeed, this schedule added a certain complexity to cleanup (since we had, for example, to use the kitchen between visits) but they managed the juggling act with great skill and good humor.  The final results is fabulous.  Everyone who comes into the house comments on how great everything looks; and we can only smile and agree.  We still have some exterior work and a couple of interior rooms to do and there is no doubt that we will call UCP when the time comes. Highly, highly recommended!

Interior Design and Decorating questions, answered by experts

Hiring a high-quality interior decorator should always start with reading through online reviews to see the kind of experience other homeowners have had. You can narrow down your search and then ask the remaining companies for references and examples of their past work. It’s during this stage that you’re likely to find a company that suits your specific tastes and one that has experience with the style you want to bring into your home. You should consider calling references to ask about the process and the homeowners’ experiences with the decorator before, during, and after service.

With structural home styles, it's difficult to build based on design trends, as they are constantly changing. While this style is popular in 2023, consider which home decor style you're aiming for as you plan your project. If you prefer modern or contemporary interior designs, rounded corners are the way to go to help you achieve a soft minimalist aesthetic.

It’s unlikely. Not many baseboard heaters come with designs that offer the option to switch to a new kind of cover, but you can certainly ask the manufacturer for more information. Keep in mind, a cover with the same dimensions as your old cover isn’t guaranteed to fit because clasps, screws, and brackets may be in different places. The only way to be sure is to find an alternate cover that’s made to work with your specific model.

Whether hiring an interior designer is worth the cost depends on your budget, the scope of the project, and your own design and project management skills. For larger projects or those beyond your DIY skills, an interior designer is often a worthwhile investment. The benefits include realizing the best layout, functionality, and decor for your lifestyle and taste; managing the project to keep it on track and within budget; serving as a point of contact for contractors; accessing discounts from suppliers; and assisting with home staging for a sale.

While the terms 'interior designer' and 'interior decorator' are often used interchangeably, they represent distinct professions with some overlapping work. The primary difference lies in the scope of their projects.

An interior decorator focuses on the aesthetics of a space, making less permanent decisions about decor. Their work involves selecting colors, fabrics, furniture, wall art, paint, and other finishes to 'dress' a room and enhance its style.

An interior designer has a broader scope that includes a decorator's aesthetic focus but also extends to the structural and functional aspects of a space. Designers are qualified to plan layouts, make structural changes, and manage overall functionality. They handle permanent decisions regarding fixtures like cabinets and bathtubs, establish floor plans, and may hire contractors.

Due to the technical skills required, interior designers typically have formal education, certification, and may hold a license, which can result in higher fees. As a general rule, it is best to hire an interior designer for major remodeling projects and an interior decorator for projects focused on establishing or refreshing a home's interior style.
