To put your cabinet doors back on the hinges, first align the door with the hinge plates on the cabinet frame. Carefully slide the hinge pins on the door into the hinge cups on the frame, making sure they fit securely. Then, gently push the door into place until it’s flush with the cabinet frame. Finally, close the door to ensure it functions correctly and adjust the hinges if necessary.

Over time, the weight of a door and wear on the hinge itself can cause hinge pins to come loose and fall out. It’s a good idea to periodically check your hinges to ensure the pins are fully in place. If your hinge pins have become loose, gently tap them back into place with a hammer or replace the pin.

You put shims between the three-sided frame to which the door hinges are attached and the framing of the rough wall opening. Using shims like this will center your door in the wall opening and allows you to make small adjustments to get your door plumb and level for smooth operation. Your shims and the gap they fill will be covered when you install door trim, so don’t worry too much about the appearance.

If your hinges are rusted, a lack of support may be why your screen door is sagging. A misaligned latch and striker may cause a slight sag. For an easy way to make the screen door more secure, purchase replacement hinges if you see noticeable rust or deterioration. To replace hinges, unscrew each leaf on your existing hinges, swap in your new hinges, and tightly screw the new hinges into place.

Vaseline or petroleum jelly will work to fix a squeaky hinge. Apply a little bit of the product across the entire hinge, especially in any scratches. Be sure to avoid getting any of it on your cabinetry. Luckily, it won’t run or drip like olive oil or other lubricants.
