While paint drying smoothly on a wall is ideal, a can full of dry paint is not. To open a can of dry paint, you’ll need a tool with a sharp edge, such as a utility knife or a box cutter. Take your tool and score the area where the lid meets the can to break through the dried-up paint. For smaller cans with plastic lids, you can run the top under hot water to loosen the lid.

Paint adheres more easily to fiberglass than other materials, and so do brush marks. Using a brush can result in an uneven texture and patchy appearance, especially when using a quick-drying paint like latex or acrylic. Instead, use a foam roller to ensure the paint is evenly and consistently applied.

An exterior paint job lasts an average of 5 to 10 years, although some might only last 2 or 3 years and others up to 20 years. How often you need to paint your home’s exterior depends on various factors. The type and quality of the paint, the application quality, the surface material, and local weather conditions all play a part in the paint’s longevity.

Unlike high or semi-gloss paint finishes, which can create an excessively reflective effect in indoor spaces, the sheen in satin is understated and right at home on interior walls. If, on the other hand, you don’t want any level of shine at all, consider opting for a flat paint or another similarly sheenless alternative like matte.

Consider skipping the primer if possible; it's only necessary if you need to cover something up, such as a stain or a porous surface, or if you want to switch from a dark color to a light one. If you have a steady hand and are a precise painter, you may want to consider skipping the painter’s tape. Instead, carry a damp rag with you as you paint to quickly wipe away any mistakes.
