In many cases, yes, you’ll need building permits for a carport. The exact laws and regulations depend on where you live, but generally speaking, you’ll need a building permit for any carport that will be permanently affixed to the ground. Premade carports sometimes don’t require planning permission or permits, but standalone and attached carports usually do. We recommend you contact your local building department to find out before beginning any carport project.
It’s almost always more affordable to buy an existing home than it is to build new construction unless you’re planning on building a new home yourself. A DIY house build will typically cost less than buying an existing house. However, new construction comes with higher property taxes, so long-term costs may be higher for new construction, even if you DIY.
The minimum recommended height for a carport is 7 feet tall, but you might need a significantly taller carport to provide clearance for RVs, commercial trucks, or other tall vehicles. You can choose your carport height based on the clearance you need and how the carport looks in comparison to the height of your home. Just keep in mind that building regulations usually dictate a maximum carport height.
Poured concrete is one of the best bases for a carport. You'll get one of the biggest bangs for your buck with concrete, thanks to its durability. At the same time, if concrete isn't in your budget, it might not be the best base for your installation. Dirt foundations, gravel foundations, and permeable pavers work in a crunch and can be long-lasting without the higher price tag of poured concrete.
While fabric and temporary carports last for just a few years, depending on the weather they must endure, well-maintained metal and wood carports can last between 10 and 30 years. In some cases, well-cared-for carports made of high-quality materials can last a lifetime. How long your carport will last depends mostly on its construction, materials, and maintenance.
