Keeping birds away from a porch can involve a combination of strategies. Start with cleaning your porch. Remove food, debris, and plants that may be attracting feathered friends. Afterward, install physical deterrents like netting or spikes. Next, top off your porch with a decoy or two—and owl or hawk works. Rat poison is dyed bright colors like blue, green, or pink. This will allow you to easily identify bait and is intended to prevent accidental ingestion.

Many scents are claimed to be roach deterrents and in some cases roaches will try to avoid them. That includes peppermint, eucalyptus, and citronella. But these scents aren’t much use for driving cockroaches away entirely -- roaches can live in horrible conditions and a few smells they don’t like won’t make them give up.
