Melville Forestry Services Who We Are Martin Melville, owner of Melville Forestry Services, has accomplished the following: • More than 35 years climbing trees professionally • Batchelor of Science in Forestry, 1980 • More than 20 years logging, with more than 10 as proprietor of MFS • 1997 Outstanding Logger award for Pennsylvania • More than 3 years as manager of logger training programs for Pennsylvania Sustainable Forestry Initiative

"Martin and his team were quick to respond after a windstorm caused some damage to a pine in our yard. His quote was the best of 3 that we got, and he took the time to explain our different options rather than just providing a quote for taking the whole tree down. We ended up just topping it to remove some safety concerns, and he did a great job at cleaning up the rest of the tree. And the tree still looks good! His crew was kind and professional, and they were done, chipped, cleaned up, and gone in just over an hour. Extremely efficient, and I will be calling him again with any other tree concerns."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Tree borers are difficult to control and remove once they make a home in your tree. However, with patience and determination, some methods can slow the damage or even eliminate the pests. But, once the damage is too much for the tree to handle, the only solution becomes removing it. Talk to a tree specialist early for the best chance at saving your tree.

Any cutting of tree roots can hurt or kill a tree, which is why it's recommended you don’t do it unless the roots are damaging or invasive on a nearby structure like your home. You should never cut more than 15 percent of above-ground tree roots at one time. If you have any questions about cutting tree roots, contact your local arborist.

Pruning is an effective way to prevent a diseased branch from infecting the rest of the tree. If the infection isn’t caught early enough and the pathogen has spread to the trunk or the majority of the branches though, it is too late to prune off the affected areas and you’ll likely need to remove the tree.

In general, trees should be planted no closer than 15 to 20 feet from your foundation. For larger trees with far-reaching roots like maples, oaks, or poplars, a good guide is to plant as many feet from your home as the tree’s height is expected to reach at maturity. Some trees, like elms and willows, should only be planted far from where their roots may encounter sewer or water lines.

The best tools for tree removal include a chainsaw for large trees, an ax for notching and cutting down small trees, and a wedge to help control the direction a tree falls in. A hatchet can be useful for very small trees, but won’t be effective for medium to large trees.
