"Derek is a true craftsman whoâ s takes the utmost pride in this work. He is very easy to work with and communicate with . Heâ s very reliable, fast and respectful of you home . He removed our old kitchen cabinets in one day and had all the new cabinets installed in four days. Very clean process. I would highly recommend him and the line of cabinets that he installs. "My husband and I were very pleased with the entire 5 week experience when working with Bob and would recommend him very highly. His work was excellent and completed in a timely manner. He was lovely to work with and provided us great insight with our projects. He had a number projects he was working on in our home and many that had rather intricate wood working which he completed with perfection. He was able to reuse our existing doors for our pocket doors and was very clear about pricing throughout the project. Bob also was so clean which I very much appreciated! The subcontractors he connected us with did a great job and were priced fairly. We consider ourselves lucky to have worked with Bob and look forward to working with him in the future!"

"J&N finished on time and on budget. They were able to chase down some trim that was hard to find, but necessary to match existing trim. They cleaned up the areas at the end of each day. Drywall and painting looks perfect. They came to us highly recommended by a retired general contractor."

"The side porch turned out beautiful! Doug listened to what I wanted done and he made his suggestions... regarding the materials, the railings, and the steps. The price he quoted was very reasonable and fair. The job was completed within the timeframe that was quoted. Doug and his crew are very professional, friendly, and did a great job. I will give them an A+! I will be hiring Furko Construction again in the future."

"Luis installed 250 sq. feet of 12x12 ceramic floor tile in a kitchen, adjacent hallway and bathroom. He also installed 4x12 subway tile in a tub/shower that also included a glass mosaic niche. He did a wonderful job and paid attention to detail and left the area clean when all was done. I will hire again for the next tile project."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The cost to install a bow window can range from $1,500 to $15,000, with a national average of $3,900. The total price includes materials, which can cost between $1,200 and over $14,000, and labor, which typically adds $300 to $1,900. Several factors influence the final cost, including the window's size and frame material. For example, vinyl frames are the most budget-friendly option, while wood frames are more expensive. Custom features or energy-efficient upgrades will also increase the price. For comparison, a bay window installation typically costs between $1,000 and $7,000.

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

To calculate the number of linear feet of baseboard you’ll need, measure the length of each wall of the room you’re installing them in as close to the floor as possible, rounding up to the next full linear foot. If it’s your first DIY molding job, having a few extra feet on hand for miscuts is a good idea.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.
