"Colt’s property service has done multiple projects for me and has done a good job with all of them. Most recently he regraded underneath my deck. And replaced the old footings. It was very tight and tricky to get a machine in, but he managed with no problems. Would definitely recommend going forward."

"I found a surprise abandoned UST when excavating my front yard for a carport. After spending weeks online researching, reading horror stories, and becoming more panicked and confused I narrowed prospective candidates down to 4 companies and began the vetting process. I spoke with Shelley at Alternative Petroleum and immediately clicked with her. She answered all of my preliminary questions, clearing up some fact vs. fiction I had read online, and had a confidence in her manner was very reassuring. I didn't wait to get all estimates because I made my decision to go with Alternative Petroleum after our conversation. Was I ever right! Maria, Shelly, Dominique and Sal were very responsive in answering all of my questions and explaining the process in detail. They returned my calls right away and always exhibited patience and a bit of much-appreciated stress-relieving humor. Sal was on-site at 8am with his crew - all very professional, respectful, hard working guys - and they quickly got the tank pulled from my extremely tight space without damaging anything (retaining wall and paved walkway). My neighbors even commented on how clean and efficient they were. This is a family-owned business and you get the feeling they really like working together and enjoy what they do. Sal's phone never stopped ringing and I can see why. Each person involved with the business is extremely knowledgeable, honest, and professional. I had encountered so much conflicting information online and from the different companies I spoke with that I was braced for the process to be a nightmare. Thanks to Sal and Company I was wrong! I'm incredibly grateful I found them. I can recommend Alternative Petroleum without hesitation, they are THE BEST!!!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Yes. A metal detector is one of the quickest and easiest ways to find your septic tank. However, metal detectors can be too expensive (costing upward of $300 in some cases), and not everyone has a metal detector just lying around. If that’s the case for you, you can also take a long metal rod and poke it into the ground at regular intervals until you hit something—likely your septic tank lid.

There is no standard depth for burying a septic tank; they are typically buried anywhere from 4 inches to 4 feet underground. The final depth depends on several factors, including the depth of your main sewer line, the height of the bedrock, soil type, local regulations, and the property's landscape. If you plan to grow grass or plants over the tank, a depth of at least 4 to 6 inches is recommended. Deeper tanks can be more difficult to locate, but a septic professional can help find it for you.

Yes, professional installations include trenching or borehole drilling required for ground loops.

Preparation involves site assessment, clearing debris, grading surfaces, and compacting soil to support stable construction.

Tree experts don’t advise against digging through tree roots, but instead encourage caution and consultation with a local arborist to make sure you don’t damage the tree’s structure or interrupt its water or nutrient intake. An arborist can recommend specific practices when digging and help prune the roots or dig a trench for utilities with a tool that can remove soil without touching the tree’s roots.
