After struggling with various contractors who either failed to resolve our water issues or were unprofessional, DJ and his team truly stood out. DJ was incredibly helpful, patient, and responsive throughout the entire process. "Very happy we had Contek repair and remodel our living room. Started with a prompt visit by Corey and a detailed quote shortly after, and we then got on their schedule about 6 weeks later. Job consisted of removing and repairing a large area of the ceiling that was water damaged, removing a 9' picture window and also repairing water damage around that, refinishing that with two smaller double-hung windows, refinishing it all inside and outside, and lastly converting a standard small doored closet into an open mudroom closet. Dan managed the job and was nothing but a complete pleasure to work with. Shawn and crew did the vast majority of the work and were also a pleasure to work with. We did have a few finishing items we weren't initially satisfied with, but I'm only saying this because they made it very clear that they wanted us to be COMPLETELY satisfied, and to tell us of any concerns. Dan really went above and beyond here, and he and the crew addressed each of our concerns. It really was a pleasure having the Contek team work on our home, and now we have a living room we can't wait to show off."

Removing a concrete slab is challenging and physically demanding. The job becomes even more complex and taxing if the concrete is thicker than 4 inches. You can use a sledgehammer and pry bar to remove the concrete off a patio or sidewalk, creating cracks in the concrete and removing the pieces. If the concrete is a larger area, such as a driveway, hiring a pro with the training and skills to use a jackhammer is often best.

Permits are required when carrying out any structural work, so in most cases, you will need a building permit to cut through a concrete block wall to install a door. If you have specific questions about your project or need to obtain a permit, contact your municipal building department or ask your contractor for advice.

First, most contractors will have a structural engineer create a report and plan for your project to ensure it’s safe to cut into the load-bearing wall. The contractor will then excavate around the wall, if necessary, measure the opening—allowing for additional space to fit and level the door, and then cut the doorway out. They will likely install a steel lintel as a header over the door for support. Once the doorway is cut out, they’ll demolish the concrete using sledge hammers and masonry chisels, clean up the surrounding concrete, and seal around the door with masonry mortar. 

Yes, you can use a Dremel to cut pavers, but you’ll need a masonry cut-off wheel and a Dremel that accepts a 3 1/2-inch cutting wheel. Slowly run the masonry cut-off wheel along your cut line, and then continue making shallow passes. Once the cut is about 1/8 inch deep, you can drive a chisel into the center of it to complete the cut.

Concrete spalling can be fairly serious, especially if left untreated or in a public area. It can be a tripping hazard and, if not resolved, can lead to structural instability.
