"In the early Spring of 2022 we hired Millspaugh to build a 10X24 feet porch over a deck. They gave us a bid which seemed reasonable, and began work shortly thereafter. We were very pleased with all aspects of their work. They were prompt, exactly on budget, on schedule, and very nice people with whom to deal. We highly recommend their services! Sincerely, Dr. J. Robert and Vera M. Moore, Springfield Oregon 97478"

Small jobs welcome

"We called Vision builders to wrap our porch posts and to add some detail to the top of the porch. I was immediately impressed when Dylan answered the phone and quickly understood the project idea. His bid was clear and proposed a great price. In our case he had to remove part of a job that was done incorrectly so we were worried that our cost would skyrocket. But Dylan worked hard and had excellent, fair, pricing. In addition to pricing, his professinalism was truly admirable. Dylan is incredibly personable, easy going and really cares about little details. He means to do the very best job he can and he takes great care with both big and small aspects of the job. That kind of pride in workmanship is something you can not tell from a bid or a phonecall. And, that kind pride in workmanship seems rare these days. Do not hesitate to hire this company. We are very happy with the job they did on our porch."

"Found Sentri on Angi. Jeanette and Violet were very pleasant and efficient in getting a contractor to me in the time frame needed. The contractor was excellent and the roof looks great! I would definitely work with them again if I had additional projects."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Carpentry is a skilled trade and requires many years of experience to acquire the skills necessary to do the job efficiently and correctly. Because every home requires a carpenter at some stage of the building process, carpenters are typically in high demand. The higher the skill level, the higher the hourly rate the carpenter can charge.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

If you don’t have a power saw with a blade where you can adjust the angle, you could use a miter box and hand saw to make the cuts. The miter box contains wide slots to support the piece of baseboard and other narrow slots to accommodate the blade of the hand saw. However, it’s tough to make non-standard cuts beyond 30 or 45 degrees when using a miter box.

No, beams are the primary load-bearers for flooring or roofing systems, and they distribute the weight of the structure to your foundational supports, while joists bear far less weight and distribute their loads to the beams. Beams are usually thicker and longer, and they have support posts or foundation walls beneath them for support.

Many modern homes have soffits, but older ones don’t, and you may be wondering why. Older homes have eaves that extend further beyond the home and help to circulate air, negating the need for a soffit. This style of building has faded away, therefore, modern homes need separate soffit installation. Modern soffits are more efficient than this older style and require less material to construct, saving homeowners money.
